Another rather disturbing argument I heard from a German colleague is that if we dont give it to Shell we can be assured the Russians and the Chinese will be here next and we all know how fond our government officials are of chinese and russian bribes

This guy reckons Shell will at last try to clean up after themselves. The other lot will just completely F..K the place up

When you put it that way, I think I'd rather trust Shell, I think...

That's what the majority of activists just don't seem to get in this, and many other cases - we NEED sustainable, reliable power generation. The fracking will enable us to do that as well. I'd FAR rather have Shell do it than the Chinese or Russians. Shell are at least accountable, and dedicated to sustainable future practices.

I remember it well from Science class in school. Well, it was a cricket ball, and some other stuff feathers, and a moer of a big glass canister that was attached to a moer of a big vacuum...

...but other than that! :D

Yeah, but - related to that. Plus it's run by the Nigerian national oil company, and a subsidiary of Shell.

There are things that you have to take with a pinch of salt, and dig deeper before accusing a company of masterminding or disregarding damage such as this. This damage is mostly from oil theft - of course it's going to be bad.

from http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/aug/04/shell-nigeria-oil-pollution-clean-up-amnesty

Shell, the largest oil company operating in Nigeria, is now facing a lawsuit in the United Kingdom where the law firm Leigh Day, representing fishermen in the Niger Delta, is arguing the company isn’t doing enough to maintain and protect its pipelines from being sabotaged by oil thieves.
