Operation Serval! My brother was deployed as a flight engineer with the French Foreign Legion- he said it was the roughest 3 weeks of his life...

I met a South African guy who serves in the FFL in the 2REP.This guys just looked great in uniform and so proud.

We had a chat and he told me that he worked as a waiter after school and applied twice to the SANDF but was turned down. His grand father and his father were in the army.He then applied to FFL and passed one of the most gruelling selection programmes.

He now serves in one of the most disciplined armies in the world but was turned down by SA army.

I met another Saffa who had just left the FFL at 26 after serving his 5 years- he told me the training was absolutely brutal; he said for his first 2 weeks he had to carry a backpack filled with gravel while they sweeped clean the entire bases' runway- when they were done in the evening the sergeant made them dump their backpacks on the tarmac for them to sweep up again the next day! But he said serving in the FFL is the greatest and most profound thing he has/ever will do in his life- he told me he took the selection 3 times [crazy] just to get in; also couldn't seem to get into the SANDF...
