For the cycle techies out there: Why dont more bikes come out with belts instead of chains? Quieter, smoother, no oil / lub required. Better wear as there is no metal on metal. Only thing I can think is it may be difficult on geared bikes, but, hey - we sent a man to the moon, this shouldnt be too difficult.

Or am I wrong?

Does work internal-geared hub, but won't work with anything that changes gears via derailleur.

That's not a single speed though... (Looks like a Shimano Alfine hub)

 

The belt works with a constant alignment drive. Not too good at swapping cogs.

For the cycle techies out there: Why dont more bikes come out with belts instead of chains?

Big problem is mounting the belt on a conventional frame, the chain stay gets in the way. Unlike a chain, a belt cannot be joined with a gold link.
