Hi Everybody,

I am new to the competitive cycling scene, but not new to cycling as I did cycle a lot as a kid.

But currently I have started taking in more seriously after my Uncle that does road cycle racing introduced me. I have an AAAAAAAAAncient road cycle and a Makro special TOTEM MTB. But I am more interested in the road Bicycles than MTB.....

Regards

Hi!

I'm looking to get started with mountain biking, and there's some really great advice (and WIDE range of opinions) here...

For now, renting a bike at Rosemary Hill while I educate myself on what to look for in a bike, and buying a few essential items of riding gear.

I've seen a nice 2016 Merida Big 9 300 for just under R10k that I'd probably buy if budget wasn't a consideration. But I'll probably try to find a decent secondhand bike in the R5-7k range.

Cheers

Hi there- new to this forum and the biking thing.

Well, thats not 100% true.

I rode in school. an old "Mongoose" whatchamacallit 10 gears (when 12 was the in thing.), made of premium grade lead. It had cable brakes that snapped on me a few times carrying my school-bag on my back, hitting tar etc. My first time ever I got drunk I had to pedal the thing in the heat back home, my mate got a flat on his single-speed and we had to walk 9km's to his house.

yeah fond memories and I guess I'm not as old as i sound here. In my 30's.

Then I got a proper bike, those with an engine in it, and I left this pedal pushing mental illness alone.

No...for some reason I picked up the illness again recently. Never done a trail since then (well those trails where just getting to wherever you where wanting to go), I rode a bike the other day when my wife got a Giant Boulder as she just wanted to ride it to work for fitness.

Holy crap? Where did these thigns come from. Shocks, gears that clicks into place, not like mine where I had to coax it into position untill it stopped making krrrrrrrr noises, and the thing seems to be made out of an actual metal from the post Cold-War era!  :whistling:   It's a cheapish bike and recently went to some LBS'...yup learnt some lingo already...to see what there are. Holy crap. TONS of toys, mostly which I cannot afford.

Anyway, took a spin on it - my butt did NOT like this and  erm...one of the fellas got sat on once.

Took another bike on a small ride and liked it.

Anyway, what did happen is I remembered how fun it could be.

I still ride motorcycles and also do Enduro riding (with MX motorcycle) but I'm in the mindset of getting into this MTB thing. It's also something my wife and I can do together, whereas the MX / Enduro riding is not, although I see myself going to like technical riding and also that we will need to get her a better bike.

I looked on here for 2 weeks, watched countless videos on bikes 26" 27.5", 29" etc and am on the one side more confused than I was in the beginning.

Anyway, sorry for the long winded first post, but looking forward to start riding.

If you like enduro. Then you'll like enduro.

Don't worry about wheelsize. Just make sure you choose round ones.

Welcome

OK - let me introduce myself

Im xnadu - been riding a few years but nothing serious - i tend to enjoy the ride and landscape and im usually there in the back so i dont think i will try and win a race so i leave that for the younger and fitter guys and girls.

Im riding a Trek 6 series mountain bike with slicks so i do more road stuff  and after all these years my wife is going to join me so we are looking at second hand bikes - i dont know if its a good thing that my wife cycles with me cause just now she out cycles me or something but lets try.

Thats me so hello to you all

Welcome to BIKEHUB.

Keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times and please don't feed the animals.

As for getting your wife involved, the more the merrier so kudos for that.

Hi my name is Lee and i am an.... :)

The wife and I purchased entry level MTB's a year ago but have not ridden much due to many different reasons....probably no more than 200km's!!! Mainly due to short trail rides at the local golf course whenever my parents could look after our twins and we were not sick...!

I have never been too enthusiastic about doing any exercise and a gym contract would never keep me for longer than a month at a time. Hate running as well!!!

Anyway I needed to start doing something to get me fit and healthy....not that I wasn't healthy, but I just wanted to feel more alive and also do something that my wife and I could do together.

So...after a visit to one of the Sportsman's warehouse stores we notice a nassive new biking section which deserved a looking!

Asked a few questions and it got us thinking...mmm...these bikes also look neat to what I remember them to.

Anyway long story short we got into it a little too quick as one does when there is something new when the wrong birdy is talking in your ear. My only regret was not finding this site or doing more research back then and being a little more patient with our purchase. Not that we got a bad deal but just that we could have moved our bike selection up a notch for something just a little better.

Anyway I have never been a bike guy and never though I would be as hooked as I am now....:D

Oh yes and I am 2.03m tall and weigh 125kg's :)

Hope you enjoy your new sport. Don't worry too much about the bikes. Just ride them. The main thing is correct fit so you can ride comfortably. If the bug bites these are going to be the first of many bikes....
