Read the following and was taken aback by the inference that the Tour of California has surpassed the Giro...

"The Tour of California is less than a decade old but already has become one of the biggest races on the calendar.

It has a better field than the Giro d'Italia, which is into its second week.

Among the favourites for overall winner are Levi Leipheimer from Team RadioShack, current world champion Thor Hushovd of Garmin Cervelo, George Hincape of BMC, Andy Schleck of Leopard Trek and Peter Sagan from Liquigas-Cannondale."

Hubbers' thoughts?

U can't really compare the two as both of them are good and hard in their own way. Ull see more attacks in the ATOC, but then again its on 8days long. A grand tour wins over any other race. Even more points are awarded for the winner of a grand tour by the UCI. Well supersport thinks that the ATOC is better coz there is live coverage of the racing, which we don't get for the giro.

That can only be American hype and marketing, but I don't think that even the Americans could be so arrogant as to imply that ATOC can be greater than the Giro.

They were clever to move the race to this date - serious TDF contenders prefer not doing the Giro, bacause it mostly features a harder route than the TDF, and I think they don't want to risk not recouvering in time. So they are able to draw some big names, but is no Grand Tour.

I think its quite funny that stage 1 and perhaps stage 2 looks like its going to snow out in sunny California.

TOC is nothing compared to the giro. It may attract some quality riders but certainly has no pedigree. Funny thing is they moved it to may to take advatnage of better weather conditions and the 1st stage gets cancelled due to a snow storm. It does allow the riders not riding the giro to get in some good race training though.

Must've been written by some yank who's trying to stir up some hype. they're so arrogant, they call their baseball league the "World Series" even though they're the only ones competing in it.

Ja the Giro field is less impressive,

Contador (TdF Champ), Nibali (Vuelta Champ), Mark Cavendish, Scarponi, Garzelli ...

Horrible turnout. 21 days of Terrible Scenic riding. No mountains, no tradition and no Highways, what were the Italians thinking...

The real question is...is the Giro the new TdF?

Not to mention that the first stage of the tour of california is cancelled.

Yip, more US-centric foolishness...

The Tour Down Under, another week long event is comparable to this US event.

3 weeks Grand Tour format like the Giro is another level of stage racing.

Stupendo Americanos!!! (wink)
