Like Tankman stated, the best camera is the one you have with you.

Also, the best gear won't make you a fantastic photographer. It is all about understanding your equipment and to use the best settings according to your light conditions.

I for one believe in good quality glass.

My camera is a Canon 1200D (entry-level) but I pair it with a 100mm f/2.8 macro L IS lens from Canon and the quality I get out of it is amazing!

Sure, my body do have downfalls - not the best in low light conditions, but the conditions I shoot in I haven't come across something major.

You get to know your equipment with time, therefore you know what conditions you can shoot in to produce good quality images or not.

Also, I am huge fan of prime lenses. Okay, yes I will need to carry two lenses on yourself (one for wide angles shots and a telephoto) but the quality of prime lenses is just out of this world.

All of my photos thus far are taken on my 100mm, and some on my normal kit lens.

I only own two lenses and if I had to buy a new lens again, it will be a prime wide angle lens (f/2.8 version).

I fully agree with you, man that macro 100mm L lens from canon is probably on my top 5 things I want. The images from that looks so good and I like the fact that I can use it for both macro and portrait photography. I own a 700d with the kit lens, however I must say the photos I get from it is amazing for me. I even used it at the uci xc world champs in Stellenbosch and I got some pretty good shots although it isn't a fast lens at all.

I had a D5200 and mainly used the 18-55mm kit lens that came with it, such a versatile lens. I got it as a bundle, and the bundle also came with a 55-200mm kit lens, however I wasn't prepared to save dosh for better lenses so I sold the camera and lenses. I use my phone to take photos nowadays.

I sold all my zoom lenses ... nothing beat prime.  Yup there is only prime lenses in my bag now!  Yes I do need to carry more gear but I also shoot with two bodies, so it makes it easier.

I will normally have a the 35mm on one body and the 300mm on another.  Room to play with and then some!

Shooting with these at the moment:

Sigma 35mm 1.4

Nikon 50mm 1.8

Nikon 85mm 1.4 - Loooooove this lens

Nikon 300mm 2.8 - This is my main sport/action lens, the focus on this bad boy is soooooo fast, I cant describe!

The 70-200 is a great lens for sports

Yea they are not bad but after getting the 300mm - I havent missed zoom's one bit!

Oh I must say the new Nikon 70-200 with FL and all the fancy stuff, has insane quality, had a look at Craig Kolesky's new baby the other day and I am truly impressed!

Yea with zoom lenses there are more glass, more elements, more stuff that needs to happen before you are zoomed in, in focus and ready to shoot.

With primes, all it needs to do is focus and that happens way faster than on zooms. The quality of zooms are pretty darn good ... the quality of primes are just better.

The difference in quality is not something you are going to spot straight away anyway, especially if you are shoothing with camara that has a 24/32 or 42mp sensor anyway. You would have to dig deep into the photo quite a bit before starting to notice any differences.

Some top shooters use only zoom's others use only primes.

Its a personal preference for a spesific application (in most cases)

I've tried zoom's and they definitely came in handy from time to time. BUT I asked myself this one question... do you want it easy or do you want quality?
