just out of interest,

a while back, a deal was made with the security guys in my area, basically they were offered a "bonus" for recovered property and arrest of suspects. the bonus wasn't cash, but a meal voucher for spar or something to that effect. the level of crime dropped perceptively... perhaps it's an idea you could use. had out pics of the bikes to security officers on patrol (with their companies say so obviously) and see what happens.

@covie: i hear what you're saying, and i understand that you're pretty frustrated by the system. but the fact remains the system is all we have. the reality of the situation, is that certain crimes have higher priorities than others and unfortunately for mtb'ers, theft of bikes is not prioritized very highly. if guns are used, that obviously up's the anty, but at the end of the day it's still a bike that was taken.

considering the inefficiency of the police, considering the lack of empathy amoungst non-riders (90% of the population at least), considering the style of riding that takes us out into remote places, don't you think we should start being responsible for our own safety?

consider this, even if carte-blanche does get involved, it's going to take months before it gets aired. and once it's aired and lets sat it's such a fantastic piece of journalism the country jumps and sparks, it will still be months before we see the results. so what about in the meantime?

Hell Eiger Im not the type of guy to back away frome someone who wants to do me wrong, But until there is some legislation that says a private citizen may incapactitate an armed assailant theres not much to do except get shot ourselves.

There was an initiative started by somebody a while back (saw it on Supercycling) whereby owners can use a data dot to mark their property. I am not sure exactly how the dot works but I assume that you register the dot on some type of database with all your details etc. The other way is for somebody to set up a type of eNaTIS register for bicycles (Without the liscencing) You can register your dirtbike without getting it liscenced so there is a record of it.

This however doesn't stop the theft! You as an individual need to not put yourself in a situation where you could get jacked. If your local trail is a hot spot, be pro active. It may be time to start kicking ass and taking names. I am sure there are a few guys and gals who would be keen on a "clean up ride"... Don't endanger any lives just enough to get the message out! If it happens in a bike park, spread the word and don't go back. Hurt them where it counts... In their pockets! They will soon sort the issues out.

Giba didn't have to feel the pinch. They were onto the suspects within hours of the last jacking! Well done guys

In addition to that make sure your stuff is insured. That way if anything does happen you are coverred.

There is no quick fix. That is the climate in which we reside. I have read a lot of comments about taking back the trails. If you are affected, don't sit back and talk about it, be proactive and get a bigger stick or srtonger pepper spray!

The truth of the matter is that the SAPF are swamped. We can't rely on them solely to resolve this issue

See what I don't understand, a bike/many bikes get stolen, people get hurt, one of my lady friends beaten by these thugs, another example Mathilda.

So entertain me here:

We are out on a Saturday morning ride, a farmworker get's mugged and her bag gets taken, in no time the place is swamped with police, combing an open field and get the twits responsible for their actions

But bikes are being stolen, all we ever hear about is how the riders got away unscathed and luckily they are ensured.

What about the ones that are getting hurt ???????

I would say it's about time the police actually start doing the job that our taxes are paying for, or is a single farmworker who has her handbag stolen, with her Zimbabwean passport in the bag, more important than the tax paying South African citizen ?

Let me say this, a little bit of visible and proactive policing that could ultimately lead to the syndicate boss, would go a looooong way in solving this issue, or is a crime not a crime ?

Not sure if this has already been posted on the hub. Received this Last night from Carlswald Community Forum. Safe riding....

Hi Neighbours

Please be aware that there was a bicycle hijacking on Saturday morning around 7am on the corner of Trotting and Gallop roads. 3 men with knives managed to take the bicycle of one cyclist (2 people were riding together).

The thieves then headed off across the empty field in the direction of Summit road. The bike was a 2011 Specialized S-Works Epic 29er (that is, a white bike with S-Works in black lettering on the frame).

I am told that there was another hijacking of a bicycle from a woman the week before along Stirrup road, near Paws Resort. She was pulled off her bike and kicked in the face. Don't know anything further other than both incidents were reported to the SAPS.

Please warn your cycling family and friends and give them the numbers of the SAPS vehicle 011 675 6115/4 whom they can call at any time to assist.

It seems like the bike thieves have moved from north of Summit road into Sunvalley/Bridle Park. Our area is a choice mountain bike route and it would be a shame to develop such a dire reputation as a hijacking hotspot.

Please note too that it was cyclists who came to the aid of a staff member (who had her handbag ripped from her just behind Georges Cafe a few weeks

ago) and ensured the thieves were arrested by the officers from the Sector vehicle!

Radio 702 and Carte Blanche have been contacted, as it seems this is not just a case of common theft, but harkens more toward a syndicate. I was also told that people (not dressed in cycling gear) were seen loading 2 bikes onto a bakkie on Summit road - maybe the thieves have a vehicle

waiting on Summit to take delivery?

If you have any further information, please contact me.

Be aware.

Regards

Bonnie

Yes this was Troy's bike, Nathrix was with him on the day, I opted to run a 10 km. race in Pretoria that morning.

The farm worker scenario happened when Carpet , myself and Nathrix were in the area , we identified the two thugs as the same two guys who attempted a bike jacking on us a week prior.

Wouldn't it be easier for Carte Blanche to contact the cycling clubs? In Pta there are about 3-4 big clubs, which would probably account for 90% of the cyclists in the capital.

Dunno about the rest of SA though...Just a thought?

Here's the link with pictures of the criminals that were caught. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/32362-joburg-danger-areas/page__st__40__p__1400537__hl__carpet__fromsearch__1?do=findComment&comment=1400537

Dangle, Carpet and I went for a ride this morning when we came across a lady who just got robbed at gun point. Midrand Police, area security and locals were quick to respond and search the field for two thugs. They were caught after searching for approximately 40 minutes, hiding in the bush. They assaulted the young black lady by pushing and kicking her to the ground, grabbed her handbag and fled into the bush. Police found a knife on one of the assailants and were still searching the area for the gun when we left. They also found her bag and the money that were taken from the bag. We instantly recognized one of the thugs from last weeks ride as we were almost bike jacked by him and a buddy of his, fortunately we caught them by surprise and there were a few of us riding in a group. The bold one has a scar under his left eye with old stitch marks and his partner in crime is quit tall with very distinctive markings on his face and very very arrogant. Have a look if you recognize either of them. They'll be getting a free meal and a cold cement bed at the Police station for the weekend. Hopefully the police will find the gun so that they can be locked away for a long time.

Micheal Knaicker, he knows Derek Watts, believe he will be contacting him

My thinking.

Get the media active, get them to create awareness.

The cops will the have no choice but to put some time and energy in to it.

Once we have a bit of active policing, they syndicate can be tracked down and hopefully a sop will be put to all of this.

My thinking, thought these were just petty thieves looking for the next quick payday.

Payday yes, petty yes, the crime not.

I think they are being offered good money for these bikes and these bikes leave our borders through an organisation.

No thug, even the dumbest will risk as much as this unless they are getting good money for it.

Guys I urge you all to go on Highveld 94.7's Facebook page and mention it there too.

Hi All,

A few Hubbers have suggested creating a map of all incidents.

I've come across a quick and effective way to do this using Crowd Map and have set up a page for it: http://thehubsa.crowdmap.com/

It allows you to submit an incident report with a specific date and time, location, description and other relevant details. I've set up three categories for now - Bike Jackings / Muggings, Theft and Traffic Accidents. We can create more as required.

By gathering and aggregating information about these incidents we can identify hot spots, areas to avoid and potentially other patterns of occurrence such as times of day. It will also serve as a central place to log reports as currently these are very distributed.

Crowd Maps allows you to set up alerts for reports in specified areas or categories so anyone can be aware of incidents in areas where they ride or live.

Here's the link again: http://thehubsa.crowdmap.com/

Thanks Admin!

Hi all

I am very sorry to have given you the INCORRECT number for the (Sunvalley) Police Sector Vehicle - it should be

071-6756114/5

and not 011

Thank you Margie for picking this up and also to Dave Marais who has said he has seen a white Nissan single cab 1tonner bakkie on a couple of occasions during the weekends on Summit road between Bridle and Mane roads. Vehicle appears "broken down" but moves off when approached. HHmmmm???
