Used 32GI this morning for a longer session than last time and I am very happy.

Had oats for breakfast (no sugar, bit of sweetner, no milk). No coffee etc, just washed my vitamins down with about 100ml of 32GI.

When out for a total time of about 2.45 or so.

Easy solo ride first and then I joined up with the club for a ride.

Roughly first 90 min was spent at like 70 odd percent, so nice and easy.

Had to take a bathroom break on my ride so I was already well hydrated to start.

The last hour of the group ride was spent over 90% with many bits surging up to 98% at times. We were really motoring it. (and that is without ANY caffeine at all, I was very surprised.)

Was a tough ride at the end!!

But inspite of it being tough my energy levels really felt great and constant the whole way.

And, how is this. I only drank about 500ml in that whole duration.

I tried 32gi for the first time in a race this morning. Also changed a few others things even though its suppose to be cardinal sin trying new stuff on race day. I tried 32gi once before in a 3.5hr LSD ride without breakfast and it went fine with just 1 bottle. So i did the following this morning for race

Breakfast 06h00 - 50g raw oats with 15g whey protein and bit of skimmed milk

Pre race - started sipping on 1 serving (50g) of 32gi 1hr before event and finished the drink 30min before race.

Race 09h00 - had 1 bottle (50g) 32gi in a 600ml bottle and a small 500ml bottle filled with EAA (essentiale amino acids - apparently bcaa is old school now). Sipped on both during race and last 1hr started taking small sips from my whasp gel flask as well.

I am not race fit yet - only started training again constructively beginning of last week after 3months of not doing much. I rode as hard as i could for the 50km race. It was quite technical and taxing. Had a hr avg of 174 over 2h40m and never felt like i was starting to get low on energy. Started cramping at 40km but this is due to body not being use to the intensity.

I am very happy and will use this as my race nutrition from now on

Saw some marketing in the Bicycling magazine as part of of subscribing package.

The 32gi product seems to be doing well.

Great report, Jaco-Fiets.

I must work on improving my brekkies.

So here it goes.....

After training with 32Gi for the past month I did my 1st MTB race on it at the Nissan Down & Dirty....70km....

Drank it the day before and a bottle from about 1 hour pre-race...

Race started and I had my one bottle filled with 32 Gi and another powder sachet for filling up at a water point....also had one packet of soft chews..

First 2 hours I rocked...finished my bottle just before the 2nd water point stop.....but oh-oh the Nissan race had NO WATER at this waterpoint!!!! only Coke and Energade or Powerade.....now I was stuffed....no more 32Gi in liquid format and no more water....I decided to ride on till the next waterpoint and not to drink any Coke or Energade....

Almost 3 hours gone and I reached the 3rd waterpoint and they had water...I immediately filled with water and mixed by 32Gi sachet, but I could feel my energy levels dropping....I panicked and grapped a Jungle Energy Bar from my back pocket and munched it down!! Energy picked up slowly and I finished the 70km in 3h47m....

OK, so lessons learnt...next time I will ride with my Camelbak filled with water in order to mix my 32Gi from my own Camelbak when an endurance drink is needed!!!....that waterpoint with no water really screwed me...don't just assume that there will be water at a waterpoint....

Thus I cannot blame 32Gi for no water.....but, the Down and Dirty has been my best result thus far...best placing..best ave speed...and I felt great afterwards...

Next race is a 6 hours 7km endurance lap race.....on 32Gi!!!

So what did it cost for your 70 km ride ?

Just wondering ... I have my own mix I make up (call it Rocket Fuel) and that works out at about R15 an hour (~ 20 km/hr). I drink it throughout the race and have sustained energy until the end, no aching legs afterwards etc. I did yesterday's D&D in 3hrs 31 and was feeling strong at the end, despite that flipping wind. For me an average time.

One observation by the way is that I find myself being overtaken whilst also overtaking people up until about 45-50 km, there after I find myself mostly overtaking people. This is my conclusion after a few events now.

My theory is that, without proper nutrition, your body runs out of glycogen (i.e. you hit the wall) at around 40 km / 2 hours and then slow down big time & battle until the end. If however you get the right nutrition throughout, you can have energy available throughout.

So if I overtake far more people than get overtaken after about 45-50 km, its perhaps because many people do not take adequate nutrition.

By the sound of it, 32GI gives people the required chemicals / food / nutrition throughout. Epic Pro similarly so.

Anyone else notice the ratio of "being overtaken" to "overtaking others" toward the end ?

To answer you all:

@Specialized, nice going, remember you dont have to clean out your camel back afterwards as it does not go off, just top up and re-use. Pop it in the fridge after an event and no need to waste.

@Ridr - You can definitely freeze it, it does not degrade under ice cold temperatures, even better absorbed.

@Trlawney - The cost of 32Gi is & only looking at retail price = R10 -R12 per 2 hours :-) so R5-R6 per an hour, a 1/3 of the price.

Mark, I luckily read the FAQ this weekend.

Got one question though

Pre-Event

Ensure you complete a serving (50grams) of 32Gi™ at least 30 minutes prior to your event, by mixing with water (500-750 depending on your taste preference). If you prefer to take in less liquid pre-event, mix a serving in a concentrate using minimal water..

Now this energy drink is low-gi, but if I had to go and mix 50grams with 50grams water and swallow the toothpaste surely the glycemic load on my body when it all kicks in will be high? Or am a wrong there with that?

You see, I wont be able to drink almost anything before a race otherwise I will need to find a bush in the race.

Gulping down a thick solution would probably be better, but I am worried that so much low-gi at once could still spike my levels more than it should, leaving me at a bad place before I even start.

Hi Woofie

OK this is the most popular question. Firstly even if you took in 4 servings you would not spike your sugar, it still releases slowly over a long period of time. There are really two ways to take the product.

1. You can load your system with a serving before hand

2. You can take in a little and then keep taking throughout the event.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Each:

1. Loading your system before hand can make you feel bloated and uncomfortable. I personally dont like it, in order to make get your body to take oxidize the fat stores the minimum intake is 25grams, half a serving. So I usually take in a single scoop and mix it in a half a glass of water and down it, I dont feel bloated and it works very well, far prefer this. Then during the event I keep taking in 32Gi in the bottle and I know that I wont ever short change myself on the feed, its a really comfortable feeling knowing you wont miss feeds at all.

2. You need to take in a little before the event even if its a little sip here and there, just to get it into your body as it starts releasing but then at least your system is getting used to it before the event starts. Then you need to ensure you finish the serving in under 2 hours.

I prefer option 1 it reduces stress, you just need to find that load of comfort, if its 25 grams or higher than great :-)

You can take 32Gi in as a concentrate, I also suffer from bladder issues with too much liquid before hand, so I take a concentrate of a half a serving

hope this helps all the best

I used 32GI in a race for the first time this weekend, I have used it on training rides before, but normally on a training ride I only take the 32GI, in the race I took a bottle of 32GI and my camelbak with water only. Does this affect the performance of the 32GI, did I un-intentionally dilute the 32GI by having the water intake as well?

Perfect!

Thanks for the info, now I can make the "pre-serving" work for me on the day.

Hi Boon,

It does not matter how much water you use at all, the important thing is that you have a serving of 32Gi within 2 hours.

So not sure how much was in your bottle, but you need to ensure a serving per 2 hours.

Sorry for the confusion but on the bottle 1 Serving = 50grams = 2 x 25gram scoops

2 scoops = 1 serving
