Sit back and have a good........

The problem with the argument that others dont obey the rules or cars dont obey the rules and therefore its okay if we do is that we have total break down of system......for lack of a better world.

No competition is worth someones life even if you are elite or pro.

They set the example for the young ones.

Having said that I agree that PPA and metro police should make more effort in making it possible to race in a safe environment, but then we have to obey the rules, and if we dont like them we have three choices, dont cycle or see if we can change them or obey them.....

But advocating breaking of rules is just not acceptable.

I think what is obvious is that amongst the cycling fraternity there are people who participate in this sport but have very different value systems.

When I go out on my bike in the morning I have respect for the world. Am I a good, law abiding citizen? I like to think so.

When I go to a race and have entered a "racing category" then for all intents and purposes I am there for a race! I abide by the rules of the road too. Conditions might arise where I am forced into a position where I can no longer abide by these rules. Therefore the onus is upon me to withdraw myself from these positions and attempt to make my way to a place that is within the rules of the road. If for some reason I am unable to carry this out because I'm sitting in the middle of the bunch then i would like to think that the race organisers have sufficient experienced to surveyed the route, identified the places where this sort of situation might arise, and have implemented some precautionary measures to ensure that some semblance of control is maintained. There are many role players who need to work together to make racing, as well as recreational cycling safe. I don't think it's fair to lambaste the licensed rider who crosses the line when clearly there are forces and situation that arise that will negate their ability to act independent of a bunch. having said that, the lone cyclist who crosses the line is at fault and I know we all don't want to fall foul of the law and try our best to remain within it's grace...

Yes, but do you see them here? Nope. Why? because they can't understand why we're having this argument... They are operating on a different value system to the recreational rider, to you, to me...

Looks like we deserve to be run off the road

Yip.....clever argument there....."you are stupid and thus you deserve to die".

If applied, should the half of humanity not be killed?

To all those who called me dumb and stupid, I?ve got an IQ of well over 140, so please keep those remarks to yourself. Secondly I?ve got two well working eyes, and I use them.

So if we sitting on the white line and I look up and the dude in front of me is letting the gap open, I will check if it is SAFE to do so and past him going over that white line, if it is the shortest way to go.

So if you want to dq/fine me for using my brains, how much do you want?

I will probably never be strong enough to stay with the Cyclelab and Bulk meat teams without some serious wheel sucking. This they know' date=' so as part of their tactics they will obviously shake me off by guttering (especially on the white line). This kitchen is to hot for me, so the they beat me even before the race is ridden.

I haven't taken part in this thread because to me it is the same as the argument as to whether you should or shouldn't treat a robot as a 4-way stop at 04:00 in the morning.  This issue will be argued ad naseum on this forum.

What I can say though, is that I check the wind directions before a race, and I check the race route.  Tactically, Bulk Pack do NOT gutter on the white line side of the road (i.e. when the wind is from the left).  This is because it is often us that are doing the guttering, and quite frankly I don't really want to have the death of someone that is desparately trying to hang on the group on my hands.

This is not to say that I have not ever crossed the white line, I have, for many of the reasons that have been pointed out on this thread.  But we do discuss wind directions before a race, and we do not use guttering as a tactic when the wind is from the left.  An example of this was the Dome2Dome - there was a strong wind from the left on the Hekpoort road from Sterkfontein to Maropeng.  Marco vb rode the front very hard up that drag, but stayed to the left - not even up against the white line, the left shoulder of the road!  We had discussed this before the race, and we chose not to gutter there because of the danger.

The TCS boys kindly returned the favout and guttered us on the Tarlton road (when it was perfectly safe to do so).

Well, not necessary die, just run off or kicked out to the backwaters maybe?  It just seems amazing that we can get on our high horses about people getting hit by trucks that drive in the yellow lane when we ride in th opposite lanes!  Perceptions are created during big events that we think we own the road and apparently it's not just a perception.  Racers will do near suicidal things to make a break, but that does not mean authorities have to take it lying down!  If they get punished for it it will stop.

BTW, I think lorry drivers are mostly also stupid, but don't tell them.

no no no Orca, you MUST

1) allow yourself to get dropped along with the guy in front of you

2) When it's safe to do so and you can see the bunch in the diastance, pass the guy on the LEFT. Jump as hard as you can untill you reach the bunch again and you are sitting in behind another guy getting dropped.

Repeat steps 1,2

Simple....I know you're stupid but you should be able to understand this Wink
