Good idea on leaving the formal shoes at the office, will make a dash to the car with flops on the day before. I think I can organize a Targus back pack.

Where do you guys keep your bikes at work? I have a place in the parking garage which only has a hook, not sure what to chain it to. Nearest thing is the sprinkler system. Going to use my road bike and normal road cleats. Think should be fine

park my bike in the gym at work. Finger scanner access with security cameras all over the office park.

Read this thread from the start to the end last night, there was some great advice (and as is custom on the hub, some unhelpful advice).

I have just completed my first commute into work this morning and it was great, felt so amazing to not be sitting in my car while my mood slowly deteriorates due to traffic.

I have a fairly short and flat commute with the option to ride on the pavements/"cycle paths" most of the way. The trip is from Wynberg to Observatory which is about 11km.

After only 1 commute under the belt I can say to everyone if you are thinking about it, DO IT!

Well done. Commuting really is a great start to the day, and something to look forward to after work. Preparation is key. I come by car Monday and Tuesday. Today I brought in towels and clothes for the rest of the week, so all I need to carry daily on my back will be toiletries and my lunch.

[/Quote] why don't you leave toiletries at work? I have at least the 3 sets of toiletries (bags) 1 for the commute which stays at work, 1 I take to races in case i want to shower after a muddy event & the 3rd is for travelling out of town.

I currently have 1 set of toiletries that i lug to gym. I am starting a new job next month, and I intend leaving a complete set of toiletries in my new office.

I also need to have my car at work, so my plan is to drive it in on Monday mornings with the bike and then commute until Friday afternoon when I will drive home again.

I'm lucky >> I park my bike in my office - not so lucky with no shower facility at work - do the basin routine !

Do you guys commute in the rain as well? I've been wanting to start again, but the weather just hasn't been playing along. I have the wet weather gear, but just not sure on the safety/visibility aspect?

Nooit too dangerous you can easily slip & fall on wet roads & motorists will not see you in the rain.

If it rains when i lookout of the window, cycling commute is off but if the roads are dry & then starts to rain then i carry on anyway.

I ride in the rain, but then again it only rains in summer here in Tshwane and Gommorah, so it's not miserably cold. When it rains I slow down a lot, take the short route and keep to pavements or off-road as much as I can, it's just safer. Remember, when thinking lights, think christmas tree! The more the better.

Respect women!

That is what we all should learn from this woman commuting in the WORST Cape Town weather. I see her regularly on this route, riding what looks like a real Dutch commuter. Respect!

Somehow lost 3 chain ring bolts on the way to work. I think i didnt tighten properly when I replaced the middle ring. I will be riding home in granny gear all the way.

Fortunately the 2 remaining bolts are on opposite ends of the rings, so I can use the bigger rings, but I just wont put too much pressure on them. Looks like i have to use the training bike for the rest of the week
