I needed to buy a new XT 10spd rear derailleur yesterday, and called Cycle Lab first, because I had recently heard that things had changed for the good there. After a very frustrating conversation with a kid that knew nothing about anything, I eventually get the price from someone else that worked there.

Total call time- Ten Minutes! Price quoted - R2295, and no stock.

So I went to Cajees for a second opinion. Moh goes to the cupboard, pulls out exactly what i am looking for, and the box has a sticker on it for R995, which he then gives me a discount on.

I won't be shopping at Cycle Lab again in a hurry.

They both suck, cajees has no service and cyclelab is always overpriced, i thought this was commond knowledge.

.. but recently Northcliff cycles get my business.

It's a great shop, with good stock. And I like it when you can see all he bikes being fixed as well. Its out of the way for me, but often worth the drive.

Salespopals are okay, although managed to convince me that a pair of MTB shoes I got there that I felt a bit tight at the time would adapt (they didnt)

I find it very disturbing how the young "salesman" get the blame for everything !! It is obvious that most of you don't realise how difficult it is for these kids to find a job and some assholes think it is nice to see how many of them you can get fired because you are such a clever wise-ass . Why don't you as the CLEVER customer show them the error in their ways and also give them the opportunity to learn something new every day . Oh wait now I remember , we are the customer and can be as arrogant and clever as we want to be because we got the bucks ?? Shame .

I hear you, but I dont know if its the customer's responsibility to teach the salesman.

I would expect any salesman selling me something in any specialist store be it bicycles or building material to have good product knowledge, and that is the store owners responsibility, putting a kid out there hoping he can make a sale without equipping him with the necessary tools to do so is also irresponsible.

I went to Cajees on Friday to sort out a brand new MTB rim that was a little egg shaped. The first kid that asked to help me swore blind that there was nothing wrong with the rim. The manager swore the same on the bible. All of them checked to see if the wheel ran true. None checked to see if there was a little hop in the rim. Clearly no one was listening. I insisted someone in the workshop check the wheel. Once in the workshop it then became obvious to everyone that there was in fact a problem. But besides this what I really wanted to comment about was the terrible workshop. It was absolutely filthy. There was not a square inch on the floor were there where no bits, parts or tools. To walk from end of the workshop to the other you had to walk over tools simply lying around every where. How the hell do you run a reputable bicycle shop with a workshop that looks worse than a sh#t house overturned. I can only assume the state of the workshop is a reflection of the people who work there and how they go about there daily lives and even how much they care for their clients.

I'll tell you now Cyclelab workshop looks like a surgeons theatre compared to Cajees. I'll tell you something else I have found the prices at Cyclelab to be pretty good of late.

good point!

my neighbours' kid works at cycle lab in fourways. his mom is a a single parent without a car, they share a one bedroom flat that's barely big enough for one person. her son is working is his arse off to save up enough money to buy a car by his 18th birthday so he can drive his mom around.

his keenness to work makes up for his perceived lack of knowledge.

Strewth dude!

It took me a full 5 minutes to stop sobbing!

I'm off to Cycle Lab.

WHO'S WITH ME LADS?!!

Two problems here:

The owner/operators of Cajees are Christian... did they covert from Islam recently?

Reputable bicycle shop... Who are you kidding?

For Servies my:

MTB goes to Johan Bornmann/Northcliff

Road Bike goes to Northcliff

Tri Bike Mike at SBR

As for shopping, always shop around but Solomons, Westdene are normally keenly price if u walk in and know what u want and know pricing.Got best price for XTR pedals from Easybike. Recently picked up my 29er from Sprotsbasement.

Moral of the story is know what u want and what the pricing is and shop around.

Cajees requires good bargaining skills.

Been looking for compact handlebars for my road bike.

Popped into Cajees.

Zipp handlebars priced R910.

Paid R650.

If you know what you want and what you are willing to pay, Cajees is great.

I wouldn't take my bike there for a service.

They seem to be in the selling business rather then being passionate about bicycle.

Centurion based. I take full responsibility for my own happiness, so some things I buy at CL and they are great with bike/rider setup, all prices I negotiate with Cajees because they always have abundant(overpriced) stock and all the rest I do at Epic....and yes I buy from CWC and CRC and Dealextreme depending on the savings available.

Cudos to Cyclelab for giving someones beginner kid a job.

Next time ask for a "sub 10 minute experienced salesman" before you start rambling of acronyms at a scared kid!

So of all the Cajees stories around and the bad service etc, which of the stores is the best to deal with? I just want to get prices on a Giant frame, and they claim to beat any quoted price.
