Sorry to say but we are way too deep in a hole to make the semi's. We need a miracle, that is the only way.

We can reach 11 points, MAX.

And we need one of the current top 4 to also be at 11 with a lower NRR or 10 points.

Looking at the table below, I think our best odds are that Australia trip over, they have the hardest run in. We need them to win just 1 out of their next 4 matches while we win our remaining 4.

Aus vs Banggladesh - Plausible, Bangladesh really put a number on the Windies yesterday, they should be condifent

Aus vs ENG - Realistic, England look good, they just encountered a freakshow brilliant performance from the Pakistanis in their 2nd match,

Aus vs NZ - Realistic - NZ are in good form

Aus vs RSA - If we win our next 3 on the trot and they lose their next 3 on the trot we might be in with a chance here to pip them on the line.

Two rained out matches for Aus would also help us...

This all assumes that Bangladesh or Sri-Lanka also loses one or two of their remaining matches.

This is a LOOOOONG shot boys, put a R50 on it, but nothing more...

If we lose to NZ tomorrow, we might as well pray for rain for the rest of the matches to save us from the embarrassment.

ja, huge longshot.

first assumption we win remaining 4 games. anything less and it's over

second assumption - ind/eng end up 1 and 2nd

seeing the windies get smashed by bangladesh didn't make our loss to them feel any better. We only got 1 point out of the 2 games vs ban and Windies, which would have seemed impossible prior to the start.

Aus should beat Ban(but who knows), and then they're just 1 win away from 12, if it came down to that (ie. we win all our games, and July 6th - final pool game Sa vs Aus becomes a virtual 1/4 - then the '99 comparisions would be all over every inch of newspaper.

I think it's more likely that NZ only win 2 games out of SA/WI/Pak/Aus/Eng - currently run rates are NZ +2.1, SA -0,2  (smashing the kiwis would really be needed to get this delta down)

it's probably 90% going to be Ind/Eng/Aus/NZ for the semis.

if we have a stellar run, then the team that loses the Aus/NZ game could make way for us (and then we play ind in the semis!)

Honestly, I think clutching at straws and depending on others to loose matches that they should in all probability win, is a little bit sad...

The boys are not going to be making it to the semi's - we should make peace with that, and the way they've been playing, they certainly don't deserve to make it to the semi's either.

That said, I do hope they pull off a few good, entertaining games with maybe an upset here or there...

is your glass three quarters empty?

1992 played 5, won 1, lost 3, 1 NR - eventual winner

2019 played 5, won 1, lost 3, 1 NR - proteas (WIndies, Pak)

Ask any 30-plus Pakistani male what the happiest moment of his life has been and, excluding "the birth of my child", you're likely to receive a personal re-enactment of the day Imran Khan and company conquered the England cricket team and the world in Melbourne on March 25, 1992.

They'll also talk about that year being the best Ramadan ever, with the beginning of the day's fast coinciding with the start of play at the Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Then they'll tell you how the relatively short daylight hours and mild weather of the season made fasting that much easier, and the sense of divine preordainment that surrounded the whole tournament.

But what has never been explained is how Pakistan's performance went from awful to incredible in a matter of days in that five-week, nine-team tournament.

The side were nearly eliminated in the competition's group stages before the weather intervened, forcing a match against England to be abandoned which helped Pakistan avoid certain defeat and, with it, elimination from the tournament. They would later sneak through to the knockout stages.

The closest thing to an upset this world-cup has been the Pakistan Win against England.

At what stage will Afghanistan have their Ireland moment....?

Not saying it's impossible - just improbable from here.  Just can't see our batting or bowling lineup in their current respective forms making inroads into any quality side.

There were so many times when we seriously just deserved a bit of luck to come out on top (1992 DWL fiasco, 1999 vs Aus with the Gibbs dropped catch and the Klusener / Donald run-out - I was at Headingly for that game).  I just don't think that our current lineup / form makes a great argument...

Would love to be proved wrong, though...

New Zealand are on course to make the semis, but world beaters they are not.

So far they have beaten SLanka and AFG comfortably, sneaked in against BAN and sat under umbrellas against India. Their tournament has hardly started.

but neither are the Proteas at present. I am not wishing they lose, I just don't see it happening (them winning) any time soon.

Why would you even shorten a game to 49 overs

dunno. they have 90 minutes wiggle room and then it goes down to a formula, no matter how small. i don't buy the TV rights thing, just play the bloody game.

guess how long this rainbreak was
