Wine 2 Wales called off

Quite a storm on Twitter that they cancelled the last stage due to "too much rain"

What a laugh, must of been a roadie decision. What about contingency plans? I would of been hacked off big time, surely mud and rain are part of the fun?

Dirt roadie decision. Ridiculous! RT @shangwilson: Race called off due to rain...absolutely disgusted!!!

Seriously? It's MTB, not club cricket. Rain, mud are part of MTB. RT @w2wmtb: @Mr_TREAD Depending (cont) http://t.co/FlYIQShF

This must have been a back line decision from the touch rugby squad!!! Riders signed indemnities!! @shangwilson

@w2wmtb why no backup plan for bad weather? What about doing day 2 over or farm roads to Hermanus? A great race like this needs a finish.

With this attitude there will be no Sabie MTB events any more either. Mud, mist, steep downhills. Just too dangerous

I think it's more to do with the river crossings. The area has had quite a bit of rain.

That is ridiculous - I have done Sabie X where you couldn't see 20M in front of you due to rain & mist -while riding down wet rocky steep decents...

And Trans Baviaans had a back up plan at short notice - so we rode another route, but at least we did it...

Not cool W2W

And so starts the storm in the teacup. I would imagine that if there was a majority unhapiness, the cheers in the tent when the announcement was made should have been boo's.

I agree that it is dissapointing, but, ultimately safety

But, lets grab the popcorn and see where this goes.

W2W is a premiere MTB event in the country and I am sure thet the organizers would not have done this if they had another option. It was not just about the rain, it was about getting 800 odd people over a mountain that looks like a river and I am sure that by tonight at 7 people would still be struggling on the course.

Anyway, like I said, grab the popcorn.

Were you at the race?

Not sure about a storm in a teacup.....

Seems like some of the big name riders are not happy, I can maybe understand calling of the adventure, probably less experienced riders there, but the race would have had many more experienced riders in it. Naturally I was not there, but to my knowledge this is one of the first times a big race has been called off due to bad weather.

Conditions must have really been tough, but agreed, they should have had an alternative route worked out. ****, I hope the Sani doesn't get cancelled like that!

Hi,

You have 2 of the most experienced comm,s making a decision on race saftey. it is not so much about riders riding in the rain but more to do with if help can get to them if something happens?

At this years National DH in PMB the final round was cancelled because the medic,s could not get to the top half of the hill.

It is very easy to sit at home and make comments when you are not there.

If something bad did happen? then what a post about why they did not stop the race?

The rules will always err on the safe side of racing.
