What watch are you wearing?

Guess I could have been more specific here...

  • Not too phased on dress/sport - as long as I can wear it with a suit, and then other days with casual dress
  • Preferably leather, but bracelet also ok
  • Size - I'm a big guy, so 42mm and up is ok for me.

Have a look at this website. A friend of mine is a big watch nut as well (he has a rolex and longiness amongst others) and he bought a couple of these. I was very impressed with the quality. He even took it to On-time watches (Omega agents) and they were also impressed with the quality. For around R10k you will struggle to beat these.

If you can push the budget to R30k then I would look on the Topwatch.co.za website. They have a few secondhand Breitlings that is worth a look. This one for example:

I'm getting married in a few weeks, and my fiancee wants to buy my a watch as a present.

As much I'd like a Omega Seamaster, it's not going to happen.

What other brands should I/she be looking at?

I'm thinking in the R10-20k range (maybe a chip-in) from me.

I'm thinking Tissot, Festina etc.

So something that's quality, decent looking ...

Tissot will be good, especially the T-touch range (abour R15k).  I have a T-Touch and love it.

Also Tag F1 series will be just North of R20k.  They have some really good looking new models on offer

At R10k to R20k you can do a lot better than than those!

I would avoid the Tags totally, the tissots range in SA is limited to the budget quartz models with few and far decent ones..

Longines is a yes from me

Omega's can be had in that range just takes some looking around.

As you are in JHB, go to Shemars in Bedford Centre (You dont have to buy anything) tell the sales guy your budget and what you would like. Try stuff on and see what fits.

I know he has a client selling an Omega speedy FOIS and its a good price. Go chat to him.

There are a lot of sharks around as well, stick to the authorized dealers unless you personally know the seller.

So onto my suggestions...

Hamilton : Huge history, ETA movements mostly with some in house ones. New in your price range. https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-za/

Fortis: Same as above, massive history, ETA and in house movements, just as spectacular as Omega, can be had new in your price range. https://www.fortis-swiss.com/

Seiko: Do not sniff at the Japanese masterpieces, there are some very high end Seikos that put the swiss to shame in terms of accuracy and reliability.

As I think of more I will put them up here.

I think I would look at an Elliott Brown - they are pretty unique in SA - and they are super solid and not madly priced either. - They also support one of my mates charities - The Buffaloe foundation - which is a big supporter of the Kwano cycling academy in SA.

Very nice! The size is deceptive. It does not look big in the picture, but I see its 44mm which is a perfect size. I also like those diving watches with the Nato/Zulu straps. That is a combination you dont see often but my mate does the same with his divers watch and it looks awesome!

They are big.... not as big as my Glycine, at 55mm - but still big - and I have dinky toy wrists... :)
