Nice one from the OP.

Again, it's a function of ability, i.e it's not about the bike. I'm a below average overweight cyclist, and would hate to lose my "granny" options. Now watch somebody (correctly) point out the flaw in my logic.

I'll focus on losing 10kg's myself before 30g on the bike, or I'll take 3 sips less of water in my hydration pack.

Nice work Eldron...

I ride a 26' with 3x9...or should I say a 2x9...I hardly ever use the granny gear. At one stage a did remove it and set the FD up so as not to drop down to were the granny gear was.

But that is beside the point. I believe that every cyclist has his "favourite gear". Mine is mostly the big blade and somehwere in the middle of the cassette. That is where I spend most of my time.

Even while seated and in the climbing position, people use different gears to get them to the top weather it is 2x10 or 3x9.

So 2x10, 3x9, yxz...It does not matter I think. Eventually you will find a gear that works for you. Even if it is just one in front and one at the back.

Yes, 2x10 is stupid..................if it is on a 26' bike and visa versa.

I am old school still rocking that 9 speed gears of mine . And to be honest I never used my granny gear .. And I stil have a 44.38.26 crank(I think)and an 11-32 cluster ... So I really don't see the use for 3x10 .. But . I think it is a personal thing ... And a weight advantage thing

All I can contribute is that I certainly won't be giving up my granny gear any time soon! It worked overtime on all three days of the Lord of the Chain Rings in Hogsback.

I have 2 X 10 and the lack of granny was tough in the beginning but now I hardly use my 1st gear on the casette.

What I DO miss is a bigger ring for flats with the wind behind you and non technical down-hills.

Spinning like some of the tannies at vrigin active till you almost bounce of the saddle is nawt fun IMHO.

When I built my bike, I chose a 2X10 XTR groupset, cause I figured, all the pros are riding 2X10, and it's gotta be good, but little did I know that a dude who is riding his bike in his backyard will proof me wrong. Guess my next bike will be sporting an Alivio 9 speed groupset with a tripple crank!

In that case you might as well get a SS or go 1X10 or 1X9.

You are missing the point entirely, the reason the 2X10 is more efficient is because you end up using the entire range of gears for a change, that is why a cassette has all those gears on it.

The only place one loses out on 2X10 is in the very heavy gear, the gear where people want to "pedal the downhills" (where they should be resting in the first place)

To those saying that it is faster to walk than use the granny - Maybe we are not as much interested in the speed of the climb, as much as how technical it is.

There always has to be one, the one who takes everyone else for a fool, the one who thinks that every lycra wearer is a technically incompetent sissy, well FWIW, we were referring to the technical climbs, the ones where 90 % of the field end up walking.

Man I hate okes like you... You type the word efficient now every Tom, Dick and Harry will think a 2x10 is more efficient than a 3x10. Plus you said faster - I give up

Sorry man, I thought we was tjommies.

Currently have the Shimano XTR 2X10 - 44/30T Front & 11-36T rear (the 30/36 combo is almost as good as a granny)... found it much easier to change into a sharp incline and more efficient... and i seldom spin out with the 44/11

Man, these X versus Y things tire me out. Which of what is better than the other. All these superiority classifications! As soon as you get into the "better than" argument, it doesn't matter which of the fence you sit on, it's equally silly from both sides. To me at least.

I'm battling to understand this "I never use my granny" stuff...

I use mine at Groenkloof, Fountains, Rietvlei, Thaba Trails - hell I even use it over "the rock" at Crater Cruise, the mast at Walkerville, Clarens, Sabie etc.

Only places that Don't need a granny are the Nissan Trailseeker stuff, Babbas Lodge, Roodeplaat Dam, 94.7.

I must be a *** cyclist!!

Ja well, no fine, then I make up for these okes, because I have a very intimate relationship with my granny (er, ok...that didn't come out right).

Forget about your strength, which is obviously the ability to talk bs, and concentrate on your weakness, which is climbing, and train more hills. Like Dangle said, it will get better eventually.
