I'm looking for a suggestion on tyres:

1. I'm 95kg, so have found that 2.35-2.4 tyres seem to work better

2. I mostly ride Tygerberg (spent way too much time losing rear wheel grip up to the tower on bloemendal yesterday)

3. I like very grippy tyres (last tyre I really liked was a Nobby Nic)

4. The most important thing is puncture resistance (an extra couple of 100g on the tyres makes very little difference when you are heavy)

maxxis DHR 2.4

I weigh the same as you - one bike has onza svelte 2.25 bought purely because the skinwall looked cool but they’ve been brilliant - 2000km hassle free (he says taking a coffee break with 30km to go and no repair kit) my other bike has spez fast trak 2.3 and these are great too - either will be a solid choice I think

So first off I just have to say this... a Nobby Nic is not a very grippy tyre (at all).

A good combo if you are heavy and want rear wheel grip on climbs as well as front wheel grip and good rear wheel braking traction on descents is a Maxxis Aggressor on the rear and Maxxis Minnion DHR2 or DHF on the front. I like 2.3 rear and 2.4/2.5 front.

I'm also heavy (just over or under 100kg most of the time), and the standard EXO casing works well for me. Have not had a single puncture on this combo yet.

Those aren't exactly grippy options though... more fast roling XC tyres.

Good suggestion. My only little add-on would be to go for the DoubleDown casings.

Much, much better puncture protection and the thicker casing allows you to run slightly lower pressures. They're also much better damped than the EXO casings, which can often have a 'woody' feel to them.

My advice based on his pref for Nobby Nic, but true, my riding is definitely less technical

I think maybe NN's just felt grippy compared to the Racing Ralphs that were on there before? Made a big difference back when I was in JHB. Anyway, looking forward to trying out something new (to me)

I have been very tempted to go for DD casings, but the extra weight has steered me to EXO purely because I have not had issues with EXO so far. I think my next set of tyres will be with the EXO+ casing (somewhere between EXO and DD if I'm not mistaken).

But ja... if you are a more aggressive rider (I used to think I am, but it turns out I'm not), then DD casings are the way to go.

I wouldn't say I'm aggressive at all - I'm just really bad at avoiding sharp rocks.

I can't seem to find DD casings in any of the normal online shops I buy from. Any ideas where to get them?

On what bike? Just curious...

A beautiful 2nd hand Pyga Stage with far too little travel for what I need want but it's just soooooo awesome.

Think the person who had this before me was some kind of XC monster, with the slammed stem and 36T 1x11 setup (I've since solved these two problems). I do feel sorry for the bike going as slowly as I do with it, but at least it looks good

Great bike - 36 and 1x11 must have been strong (well by my feeble standards)- 100mm travel is good enough for Matthys Beukes and it's what I have - never felt wanting but I'm particularly rubbish on anything technical and more travel would be wasted
