OK, you want to play.

If this is true, then we need to know what the event is, and who this friend is. I know a lot of event organisers, even big 'prestige' event organisers, and, while there is a living to be made, not one of them can sit on their bums for a full year from the proceeds of one. Not even the Epic.

Can you back up your claim?

I'll vouch for that. I work with the Epic at the time of the Epic and I KNOW that when one is done, the planning for the next starts. I did not sleep for days and nor did the Epic guys and girls with whom I had dealings.

I can only think it is the EPIC, what other event asks an entry fee high enough to pay all the suppliers and staff, and still allow the organizer to not have to work for the rest of the year??

Sorry man but this is also very hard for me to believe, Advendurance stages the biggest MTB races on the calender with the MTN series and the NIssan Series in the Northern Area, if your statement was true then Fritz Pienaar and co would be a multi millionairs and could have kept all his shops. It has been proven numerous times without a sponsor an event means jack **** and can't be staged properly

Let's do an quick estimate:

Entrants @ Advendurance Teak +- 1000?

Between R150-R200 per entrant. (let's be conservative - R150)

Waterpoints - SPONSORED (powerade?)

Quads - SPONSORED (Nissan)

Venues - SPONSORED (Nissan)

Marshalls (small change say R20 000)

(1000 x R150) - R20 000 = R130 000.

Now who needs a bike shop (or three) if you've got 5 nissan and 7 mtn (all advendurance) events...?

I havent read the whole thread, but sponsorship's are not always for free. Many times the supplier will sponsor something at a very reduced cost, but there is still a cost, take a drink supplier like coke, depending on the budget and the event they may give away a certain amount free, but then the customer pays a reduced rate for the balance, on some events its none is free but they will give a reduced rate.

Same as venue providers, say it costs R100 bucks an hour to rent a venue, depending on the event the management may say okay its high profile, we can get maximum ad mileage we will do it for R20.00 bucks an hour - in today's world seldom will a sponsor say "Here are 10.000 soft drinks go have fun" - sponsorship usually still comes with a price tag.

Quads - SPONSORED (Nissan) Fuel? Manpower?

Venues - SPONSORED (Nissan) For free? Unlikely.

Website, telephone, petrol, route set-up, advertising.... the list goes on

Money for jam, indeed

I rode the Grape escape last year, (it was around R800 entry) i cant say it was an amaizing ride (but you know us mountain bikers, if we are suffering we are enjoying it)

the first day was terrible, 47 degrees celcius and no cover from Blaauberg to Wellington. Day 2 only a third of the field started, the other 2 thirds came back and finished day 3 (day 3 is not the exact same route as the argus mtb, at some stage we turn off and did an extra 10k's)

A few of us emailed the organisers expressing our dissatisfaction but the response was "sorry you feel this way but thats the fee"

I received an email from them a few days ago and i see they are giving entrants clothing and bags etc.

Out of principle i will not ride the Grape Escape again :cursing:
