As far as I know Kevin did use to play Davis cup but as he went up the seeding ladder he also had to be more selective on which tournaments he play which will be used to prepare for the next Grand Slam. The Davis Cup normally stuffs up this schedule and was also the reason why he did not participate in it anymore. Kevin went to great lengths to explain it. It is so interresting how most of these SA sports stars get to where they are with pretty much no support from the various SA sporting bodies and when they do have success guess who is the first to lay claim to it.
