Well, at least since the 29er debates started on forums around the world Lance has had breather from the limelight!!!!!

What we need is a verified sighting of Lance riding a 29er, wearing a powerbalance band, and for him to tell people that he used 32gi during his tdf wins. Now that would be a thread with some legs.

Took my 29er Giant hardtail with SRAM X7 on its first ride and on a ride with a 300m ascent was 2 mins faster than my previous best on my Carbon Anthem X Adv with XX components - 2kg lighter than the 29er. Am replacing the 29er hardtail and Anthem Adv with S Works carbon dual 29er. Keeping my Trance X Adv 26er for the fun stuff.

That Burry guy said 29er definatly faster but he has more fun on a 26er - since I don't earn money from riding that settles it for me - 26er.

Right, this thread is now sorted - Burry has had the last word! Just enjoy whatever you ride, now all of you get back to work or riding your bikes!!!

In completely unrelated news - do you think the difference between 26/29, shox/noshox, gears/no gears makes a huge difference?

Here a completely unscientific answer:

My pal and I are quite similar in talent and usually finish within a minute or two of each other....a few weeks back I rode my single speed steel 29er with rigid fork in the same race as him (he was on his 26" carbon duallie...

What do you think the difference was?

3 minutes - 2:38 versus 2:41 in his favour.

The previous race we did together we finished together after a monumental battle.

So 3 minutes difference with no front suspension and no gears? Hardly makes the 26 versus 29 thing worth discussing really.

I smiled more I guess so I won. Hold on - I crashed after boucning off a rock and landing on my elbow so he wins.

Moral of the story: use a shock - them rigid forks are dangerous! Don't boother with gears - the smile factor is way higher.

If I had to do the single speed thing all over again I think I'd go 26". Looking back it was a bit silly to go 29er on a single when the bigger wheels take some of the WHEEEEEEEE factor away.

My race bike will remain a shocked geared 29er HT.

If I was going to do the MTN XCO Series again this year I'd go 26 geared hardtail.

Here endeth the random rant...

I ride the Giant XTC 29er up in Pta area and thought the thing was awesome - until I did some single track at Jonkershoek (described at the time as mountain biking nirvana!) and Lourensford.

I fully agree with the sentiment that the single track, specifically where there are a lot of switchbacks are difficult with the 29er and the bike appears to be less responsive than okes asking to come past on their 26er.

29er is great for going over things (great momentum with the big wheels) but the technical stuff for guys like me that's not a pro - not so easy...

i smile more on my 29er..... oh, and i also let it all hang out through the technical stuff i used to be scared of!!!

Does a 29er help to pull girls? ;)
