I had a heavy fall on my MTB today and x rays show my orbital bone in my hip is cracked. What now?

Does this mean the end of my cycling?

Has this happened to any of you?

Yep happened to me I also thought it was the end but it was not. It did take very long to heal though, I think the fact that I was walking around while it was trying to heal made the healing process very slow. I felt that cycling helped the healing and caused no pain, but walking caused a lot of pain. But after about 4-6 months I was walking with now pain again. But if you do ride with your hip cracked, try not to fall on it again, remember to fall on the other hip.

fractures tend to heal by themselves without requiring plating to realign them. As Scotty said, the specialist will give you the best guidance. Dont be shy to get a 2nd opinion if u not comfy with the recovery recommendations.

Walking is painful but cycling is not. It is very tempting,

Thanks for the great advice and suggestions. Have an appointment later this morning but the Doc want's to operate? Resting.....don't know about this.

On a crack!!!!!!! I Have lots of questions for the Doc.

Second opinion is certainly required guess I may just cycle to the appointment so he does not operate!

Sorry to hear about this. hope you make a full recovery.

Just don't rush your recovery. Not to scare you, but my uncle ended up having 25 separate hip ops over his lifetime, and still wound up in a wheel chair eventually.

1) Do NOT rush the process

2) Do NOT be in a hurry

3) Do NOT forget 1) and 2)

It goes against every guys instinct to want to get back up and at 'em, but you will only end up making the process longer.

The same happened to me, did hospital time, physio time, started putting weight on it in a swimming pool under specialist supervision - went on to race quads and MTB again.

Thanks again guys for the empathy.

It has been confirmed as bust and a pin is the only option.

Going for second opinion. And yes, I hear what you say, will take it slowly.

Many thanks again - it has been a shock to my way of life and my system!

A mate of mine broke his hip in a crash at "The fast one" a few years back. It was a big operation and he spent quite a while in hospital, but he followed his doctors advice to the letter and today he is fully recovered, you gotta go with the specialists reccomendations - walking comfortably again is a lot more important than a few missed bike rides, Best of luck, I hope it gos well.

ok I was 23* at the time, but i put myself out for a while.

fractured pelvis

fractured pubis

2 fractured lateral vertebrae

all healed, and done loads of cycling since. like loads.

weird thing was that with all the lying down and doing nothing it took a while to get back into the swing of things (walking was a mission at first). then about 6 months later, I just realised that everything was finally sorted. take your physio seriously.

*it's a good story now, stellenbosch locals would know the tollies balcony

Sepia,

I trashed my ankle on January 7 this year...talus fracture...google it, no good news on the web about it which is why I stopped looking there. Instead I made contact with another guy who had a similar fracture and was back on doing five hour rides three months after breaking his and mentally it gave me what I needed to deal with it.

In laymans terms the talus is pretty much the ball joint that plugs your foot into your ankle, not only one of the hardest bones in your body but as a weight bearing and "functional" part also one of the trickiest fractures to get aligned properly. Somehow I not only completely broke it off, I also broke it in half, coupled with a dislocation and torn ligaments. I had to have surgery the same day, got some screws and K-wires put in, had to keep my leg still and elevated for five weeks, I'll be in a moonboot for another two before I can start putting weight on it and then physio. Had to have surgery again to get the K-wires removed now that the bone has knitted. I had Xrays a few days ago and the Ortho was very pleased with his handiwork and all is on track, it's looking much better than they expected.

This may be a different fracture but my message is about dealing with it mentally.

Lessons learnt:

1. If you need surgery, get on with it. In the long term you'll be glad you did.

2. Morphine is awesome

3. Time out is NOT as bad as you may think. I thought I would go absolutely demented being unable to ride / surf etc to my hearts content. Your mind is a wonderful thing and once you make peace with the fact that you physically can't do something it somehow doesn't bother you as much. Being physically unable for me has been easier than being physically able but restricted by other factors or commitments.

4. If you have a wife or a GF that looks after you...be very very grateful. Mine has been serving me three meals a day on a tray as I am on crutches and can't crutch and carry anything at the same time and completely run all things household / domestic / dog and kid related....woman are amazing beings, if you have one, appreciate them. Really. So are friends...getting a lift to work and back with a mate at the moment and discovered that "lift clubbing" is actually good fun if you're doing it right.

I guess what I am trying to say is that **** happens. If your mind is strong, you take it easy and listen to your doctor you'll get through it and you'll be back on the bike before you know it. When I get bummed out about it I always just think thank the pope I broke my ankle and not my neck....there's always a bright side.

Good luck you'll be fine, keep us posted.

My dad cracked his hip about 2 years back on the Lourensford mtb. Took him two weeks of being stubborn and not even able to walk before he saw the doc. They operated and he was back on the indoor training within 6 weeks and hasn't had a problem since. He can feel the pin, but it doesn't hurt him at all.
