Geez..........You people can whine, just be happy they at least made an effort.

I dont care if they swapped bikes half way through the race, they are not cyclists and besides it is a tour not a race for 70% of the field.

Its just jumping on the populist band wagon which make me painfully wince .. and the big issue for most cyclists is .. SAFETY. Both in terms of dangers on the road form other vehicles and security.

Are these politicians ever on their bikes where there is not a camera around?

Yep. Tannie Helen is a keen cyclist and has been riding with Cycle Lab Club in CT for several months. Check their newsletters. I think there was an article on Cycle Nation about her, too...

If they were on bikes, surely that means they are cyclists?

Thats one view - the other is allying or aligning themselves with a popular sport for the sake of brownie points.

But Big Up to the White Madam if she is n active cyclist. In London the Mayor Boris cycles to work (w/o a helmet)

Our sport and needs flighted over an ever increasing stage.Budgets eser to justify.More funds pouring into the sport.

Sounds like some are sour because they weren't asked to pilot the tandem instead.

Ride the cycling awareness campaign wave with them.

Perhaps now less people will refer to the event as the augus/t (One can only hope).

whether or not they rode the whole thing, rode it alone, swopped bikes for a tandem or an electric enjined bike is irrelevant. The bottom line is that we will all benefit down the line as these politicians are doing more for safe cycling than any of their predecesors. That was the whole point that the 200 odd riders was trying to make when they first decided to ride around the mountain.

One thing that did irk me was the people on the side of the road with their banners and posters opposing the new toll plaza on chappies and other protests. If you feel strongly enough about your cause, get on your bike and ride the route. Don't stand at the side of the road eating donuts and think that you've contributed.

No....next time we are going to tell that little opportunistic so and so that either he completes the event under his own steam, start to finish,or he can bugger off and go somewhere else.Oh,and while we are about it,no freebie tv,press and radio exposure for good measure.

Yeah.......uh Minister that cycling lot are looking for additional funds to send their team to the Olympics....

Tell them to sod off!!!

Probably met them on their second lap... ;)

What really irks me is the fact that Andrew Mclean and Jerome Swart were allowed to do a 2nd lap to help the lazy unfit ministers, yet my cousin and I were told by the race organizers in no uncertain terms that we were not allowed to ride the route twice, the penalty being a 2 year ban, to raise money for a 4 year old family member that has Burkitts Lymphoma???

Obviously the organizers have double standards with regards to enforcing rules... Especially when one cause brings more publicity to their event.

Maybe ........ Sure ol Zille did build the new cycle route  , but there is a fine line between just doing an event for publicity and actually taking up the cuase of cycling.

For that ladies and gentlemen we will have to sit back relax and see if they actually do anything about it. Proof is in the pudding as they say. Personally im sceptic and pessimistic, about this, its a brilliant platform to launch a PR campaign for themselves, not so much a brilliant campaign for cycling in the least. the argus makes it look like we have a army of happy cyclists that freely commute safley wherever they want to. We all know this is not the case. We also know that the only reason cycling is fairly healthy as a sport in this country is becuase so far we managed to keep politics out of it (CSA and their development rider campaigns aside) Im all for development riders getting brought into the sport but in the right way off course.

Anyway heres to hoping for the best but silenty expecting the worst.

We rode a tandem and finished a few metres in front of Helen Zille. Overtaking her, we checked out the very cool black tandem but never recognized her. Approaching the finish, the spectators made quite a fuss over us, until we realized that it was for her that the crowd was cheering. Well, I suppose that's another lesson about my own humble place in this old world. I like Helen Zilles SA flag helmet. The flag looks a lot better on a helmet than on a shirt or shorts. I also like the idea of it flying on top of the mast so to speak. Everyone should do the Argus at least once, even polititions.
