I am sure these stage compare with if not more hardcore than the Crater Cruise in the scorching dry October heat (?)

For the average weekend warrior its long hard haul.

I'm one of the 2012 DNFs. I spent the last 9 months training, often at the expense of spending time with my eight month old boy...committed to finishing to the extent of obsession, and came in, knowing I had the legs and lungs. Had to pull out, after 10 hours of vomit and sh*t spells on Tuesday night. Trust me, there is nothing more devastating than sitting on the side of the road, with nothing more to give...getting back in the saddle for 500m and repeating. Put that time (and yes, own money) in and you'll understand the feeling. Ironically, it's my boy that gave me the stomache virus. So yes, lots of reasons...but none of them I would guess would be "I thought it would be easy".

Eish that sucks bud, sorry to hear it. No sense racing when your body is trying to fight off a virus.

so what are the rules if you a) dont make cut off or B) dont finish one day for some reason? is that the end or can you keep on riding but just not get a medal?

Sjoe...........I can't think of something to say that can make you feel better. But I can imagine that you must be devastated.

Multi day or multi stage events, I've never done.

It's another level of endurance plus the science of nutrition, recovery, mental stamina.

COOL thread.

All I can say is try it before you comment on drop outs. Nothing in the weekend races compares to this. Every day there is severe climbing, very technical decents where bikes and riders take a pounding and then there is the weather.40 plus temps are not uncommon and you do this for 8 days in a row.

By the way only 5 teams DNF today and that was over 140km with nearly 3000m of climbing. Pretty impressive.

Bottom line do it before you wonder

If you miss the cutoff, but complete the course you can carry on the next day. You won't be an official finisher. If you miss the cutoff for a second time you may not continue.

Dude, we not talking about drop outs here. We discussing why there is so many non-finishers after 2 days, the list is growing.

I was a spectator at the 27km prologue, to see the "back markers" suffer on a 27km circuit I knew that a lot will not be able to survive stage 1.

I have more respect for the back markers than the pro's! To go out and ride for 8 days 10 hours a day suffering...RESPECT!!!!

I heard from one of the Epic guys earlier in the year that they have to bank on about 30 - 40% not getting past day 3/4 to be able to turn a decent profit. Not sure why but that was his comment during a sponsors meeting.

Jeez I didn't know it was R37K, I was thinking about it but I think I'll head for Jozzi2c next year.

You need to do Cruise on a SS, much easier.

Gears / no gears / 26 " / 29 " whatever ... I only do the Cruise if I feel up to a bout of penitence.

Look kudos & respect to all those who attempt this Ultra Marathon x 7. I have some vague appreciation of what it must be like. Its just obvious that some go into this with little insight on how demanding it is, both mentally and physically, the results show that, notwithstanding the unfortunate ones who have to stop from injuries or sickness.
