Thanks for your reply divernick, appreciate it.

I am just thinking it would be nice if I could buy the steel single speed from a bike brand. Buying loose components is just not cost effective.

Lets look at a Momsen AL529: If you buy the frame and components to build up the bike it would come to ~R18 500 at CWC / CRC prices. The retail price is R14 000 before you started negotiating. Separately the Reba on that bike is R4000 and the Crest wheels R5000 alone.

So I'm thinking if Momsen sold a single speed steel 29er with a Reba and ZTR Crest wheelset it could come to ~R12 500. I would buy it in a flash as the same build with an Inbred frame is going to cost me R18 500.

Yo Showtime

Firstly the Inbred 29'er steel frames ride like an absolute dream, a little on the porky side, but it is a steel frame after-all!

With a frame that is not SS specific you will have to use a tensioner and what I found with previous builds is that a SS with a tensioner just does not feel or look right.

If you are not concerned RE good second hand / used components you can build a very nice SS for a great price.

Please do not compare a On-One to a Momsen, I am asking nicely ;)

Showtime, you're quite correct in that building up a SS isn't cheap.

Your best bet is to keep an eye out for local bargains or a complete ss from various manufacturers.

If I'm not mistaken some shop (could have been CL) were recently selling a steel frame Trek SS complete (iow, ready to ride off the floor) for R7.5k

Linden Cycle were also selling GT Peace for similar money recently.

You can buy this from Sports Basement for around R5000 if the clearance stock is still available.

Also, I don't agree with the big manufacturers bringing out complete SS bikes. They are simply cashing in on something that has become trendy.

As for you comment about Momsen  :D No comparison to a good steel frame.

Thanks guys, I definitely want the steel frame. Momsen was just my example of the value you get with the build kit as supposed to buying separately.

I guess I will get the frame and sort out the details later. So now it comes down to sizing.

I'm 172cm with a 79cm inseem and 72.5cm saddle height. Their sizing chart puts me on a 16" but the seatpost extension will be allot.

The 18" only has a 602mm top tube and if I'm running a short stem that should be fine I think. My Anthem has a 595mm top tube and a 100mm stem.

I think 18"?

Posted

I am 1.78m and ride the 18" with a 70mm stem and an inline seat post. .... this is to become a 60mm stem soon.

Will check inseam this evening as I might get strange looks doing this in the office right now.

I recon at 1.72m you might be a good candidate for a 16"

Thank Hairy, punched my numbers into competitive cyclist fit calculator and you are correct. The 23" top tube of the 16" looks right, no use pretending I'm taller than I am. I will start with a 70mm stem then.

All Mountain Fit

-------------------------------------------

Standover Height Range: 29.6 - 30.2 inches

Virtual Top Tube: 22.4 - 22.8 inches

Stem Length: 6.7 - 9.1 cm

BB-Saddle Position: 65.7 - 71.7 cm

Saddle-Handlebar: 49.4 - 51.2 cm

Buy the Momsen for R13 000. Buy an inbred frame and rigid fork for R3 500. Sell the Momsen frame and fork for R4 000. Sell the groupset for R3 000. Buy SS cranks chain etc for R1 500. For R11 000 you've got a great bike.

Yes but I live in the middle of nowhere, impossible to sell stuff from here. I mailed the Momsen guys to suggest they offer the STR29 as a complete bike to save everybody the drama of trying to sell the left overs of a donor bike. That STR29 frame looks nice. But that's my last Momsen comment before I get kicked of this fred :w00t:

The Momsen STR29 frame is nice - steel too - but there are only 6 of them in existance at the moment.. mine is still in a box....

Time to throw those Avid brakes in the bin and get some Shimano's or Hopes....

Get cranks, chain and cog for around R1500

Inbred 29er frame bundle around R4500 (http://www.on-one.co...er_frame_bundle)

Wheels? R1000 - R6000 depending on your preference.

Brakes? Used on the hub or R1100 for Deore hydros on CRC

So for less than R10 000 you get a steel rigid 29er SS.

Thanks Nick...

i think i now know where my Bonus money at the end of the year is going....

just need a set of wheels than I'm sorted..
