I had a Jeep Cherokee Sport. I absolutely loved that car. I was very capable off road (MUCH better than my mate's Landrover) but is cost a fortune to maintain and had a serious drinking problem.

I did 160000 trouble free km's with it. The last 20000 cost me 40k to keep the car on the road.

They suffer from Shite resale value too. Having said that all high end SUV's suffer from the same Maladies. I HAMMERED my Cherokee and it was great when it was great. But it really hurt when I had to get it fixed. Nowadays I get my offroad kicks on something that is actually built for it. A Yamaha YZ250F.

The Good

Great Offroad

Feel good factor

The Bad

Fuel Consumption

Cost of Sapres

The Ugly

SHOCKING resale value.

If you want to go offroad rather buy an old jeep or landy. Better yet a quad or dirtbike. They are actually built for that unlike most SUV's. And it wont matter that they sit under a tarp while you get the cash together to fix them when they break.

Oh and 1 other thing. Hetrosexual men are NOT ALLOWED to own Wranglers.

Luck of the draw I should imagine... a friend has an old Jeep Cherokee I think it is, bought it with near on 300,000km on the clock for a stupid price and almost 2 years later its still going on and has not cost anything other than a burst radiator pipe.

However some friends of friends tried to sell their pretty well looked after Cherokee and got almost next to nothing for it.

My plan would be to sell it with at least 1,5 years left on the maintince plan.

How do they hold value while still ocvered by maintince plan?

Team jeep have pumped a lot into mtb over the past few years, maybe it's only convinced okes only to buy the clothing and stay well away from the cars reading this.

My main offroad hassle with my Jeep Cherokee was that it had the most terrible clearance. It was something pathetic like 180 mm's. So I couldn't do proper offroading with it as any small rocks would batter the C#@p out of the undercarriage. If you want to do offroading get a vehcile with proper clearance. I would recommend atleast 250mm's. Anything less than that and you are looking for big trouble....

Just looking for something that with tackle the dirt roads on my way to and from MTB events better than my 3 series does at the moment

If it’s the latest model (which was launched second quarter 2011), then it’s very much next-generation Jeep.

Looks quite a lot better than the original (has the Gran Cherokee’s vertical seven slat chrome garnish grille) and has much improved noise, vibration and harshness levels under operation.

Some of the old issues remain, though: the engine’s terrifyingly inefficient and as such severely heavy on fuel. Gearchange is horrid. Cabin architecture improved, but materials hardly class leading, and with oversized A, B and C-pillars it’s quite claustrophobic to some, especially rear seat passengers; especially kids.

It has lots of kit though.

All soft-roaders are similar in terms of off-road performance and new Compass has the regulation ABS actuated slip-mitigation system operating on each individual wheel if you break traction; clearance is commendable too: 205mm.

Standard 18-inch alloys are a bit of an original equipment disaster, ride quality depreciating and those lowish profile tyres are hardly candidates for longevity if you do notable volume of dirt road driving. The black plastic cladding fore, aft and on the lower door panelling along the flanks, sure, it looks silly but should reduce scratch repair bills notably.

All things considered it’s much better than the original, but the Koreans have a some very compelling alternatives.

I would love a sportage but at R290k for the equvilant car in terms of spec to the Jeep it is alot of money for the same thing,
