I'm currently riding old lx and its bullet proof, just goes on. That being said ,should I upgrade will be XT. On a budget I'll ride slx no complaints.

No you all got it wrong here.

Best groupset:

SLX disc brakes

sram X0 Gripshifts/trigger shifters

XT front mech

sram X9 rear mech

XT crankset

Please don't let anyone make you imagine that there is anything much more than weight and serious bling between today's SHIMANO groupsets.

It's not like years ago where there was massive differences between them, at the cost of production and efficiency, many parts are exactly the same except for the finish/material being used.

If you look at the 2012 deore, slx, xt and xtr you will see it evident in many parts such as brakeset's, shifters, mech's, etc etc.

If you are starting off, there is nothing wrong with a bit of a mix and match, for example, my "dream recipe" for a beginner who want's a great SHIMANO groupset would be:

Deore M596 2012 Brakeset

SLX Chainset

XT Rear Mech

SLX Front Mech

Deore M591 Shifters

Then, if you want something a bit more blingy:

SLX 2012 Brakeset

SLX Chainset

XT Rear Mech

SLX Front Mech

SLX Shifters

If you want something with street cred:

<GL> Very Close, just need the Shifters still, actually got a XTR front Mech

XT 2012 Brakeset, i-Tech Rotors

XT i-Spec Shifters mounted to brakeset

SLX Chainset

XT Rear Mech

XT Front Mech

If you want almost racer/sponsored, flashy

XT 2012 Brakeset, i-Tech Rotors

XT i-Spec Shifters mounted to brakeset

XTR Chainset

XTR Rear Mech

XT Front Mech

If you have loads of cash full XTR.

SLX - meh

XT -

XTR - If cash is no object

Just to give you a real life example of what I am talking about. I recently smashed an TR derailleur against a rock. Carbon age broken, pulley in th ebush and the derailleur bent, so written off. Replacement came to the following :

2012 XT shadow - £55

2012 XTR shadow - £165

XT does the job perfectly well enough at a third of the price.

Agreed, whether it is Sram or Shimano, unless you are a weight weenie with money to burn I would as a rule always opt for either X9/SLX or X0/XT.

Beter value and greater durability for much less bang

Now if my rear Derailer (XT) can just keep it's indexing points.

got to agree, it's taken some punishment and it just keeps going.

Funny ... a couple of days ago everyone pissed their panties when a certain someone did not post in the correct forum....?

XT by the way!

Everyone who says XTR is not considering an average rider doesn't want to replace chain-rings and cassettes every 5 minutes, SLX-XT mix is STILL the best mix, keeping in mind going with SLX is going to be no problem at all and will outlast XT and XTR. If you looking for ultimate brakes on a budget shimano's new ZEE is looking awesome!
