Hi All

As the topic states I need some advice/pointers for winter cycling gear? The temperatures are getting very cold in Cape Town. I know to continue cycling during winter months I could start my weekend rides mid morning but leaves little time for other stuff over weekends. I normally head out around 07:30-08:00am in the mornings.

I’m getting some long gloves this weekend. I doubt if these with my long cycling tights and First Accent Apple jacket will do the trick. Any suggestions or tried and tested ideas will be of great help...Thanks.

Either 1) Double up on socks, or 2) Thermal socks

Leg warmers. Long sleeve skins on upper body, cycling shirt over that, with a jacket over everything. 3 Layers on upper body. You got 2 layers on your arms then, so no need for arm warmers. And BUFF for the face, trust me on this on. Pull it up so that just your eyes stick out. And obviously clear glasses to keep the wind out of your eyes. Buff also keeps the wind out of your ears.

wtf is wrong with you... htfu up. Its chilly the first 10mins. If you're riding properly, you'll warm up within 10mins. In the last 2 years I havent worn more than a windbreaker. No longs, undervests, etc etc

get knee warmers, full tights are not acceptable. Get a long sleeve cycling top and wear your apple jacket over it. With long fingered gloves you will be fine, the only thing that will suffer a bit are your ears. get a fleece ear warmer and off you go. At worst it is only going to get down to 6 degrees or so, it is better to be a bit chilly than dressed like a Michelin man

Was last off the track at Kyalami 7pm last night - it was cold and am feeling it today despite being dressed pretty much how Azonic describes.

Its leaving me wanting to get some better gear at the weekend esp as Transbaviaans is coming.

Had First Ascent base layer, long sleeve cycle shirt, Gore windbreaker. Cheap long bibs, thermal socks, Polar Buff.

Top half got cold & thighs - i think its because Kyalami is pretty much built on a hill so you toil up there, get hot, then steep descent followed by flat/slightly downhill where the sweat comes off and its $&%^#* cold.

Any ideas on warmer gear?

My gear:

Two pairs of socks

PRO H20 Shoe Covers

Endura Leg Warmers

Endura Long Sleeve Top (Vest underneath)

First Ascent Magneto Jacket

First Ascent Headband

RavX Winter Gloves

Keeps me warm enough. Last week Thursday my Garmin recorded 0.4 degrees (Morning rides usually 4-9 degrees)

Pair of thermal socks

Vest

Thermal longs

Wind proof jacket - cheap euro autumn gear

Windproof skulcap - cheap euro autum gear

Windproof gloves

Works great for the coldest of dawn rides in the cradle

Makes a massive difference to your body temp, I think you lose a lot of body heat through your feet

And through and exposed neck as well, hence the buff.

At mr price sport they sell thermal underwear at the rugby section....I cycle with that and it seems to regulate the temperature changes. I tend to still wear at least two layers over that.

Very true....

Damn, now I am cold.

How are you guys in PE doing?

Its a bit wet out this way... Personally, I'm sick. Stuffing up my Trans training AGAIN. Tuesday morning did 12 repeats up Brickmakers Kloof, and in the evening a 75km MTB semi-hard MTB ride. Wednesday morning got dressed for my session and just before I went out decided that the scratch in my throat was'nt feeling to lekker. By Wednesday night, floored. Eyes watering like a swamp frog, etc.

Sorry to hear...heal up soon, wouldn't be nice for all the training to go for nothing wrt Transbaviaans...

I wore latex gloves beneath regular long fingered gloves after reading about it on another thread. Its a cheap solution, and my fingers were never cold along the 40km ride we did that morn. Try it.

This would also work to keep your face warm
