Snapped my chain last week, so replaced with 2 quick links that I had , but I have used SRAM 10 speed links on a Shimano 29er chain. Is that an issue?

if its a shimano 10speed chain then you can used a sram 10speed link. no problem

Note you dont get a 29er chain , its 8speed , 9speed, 10speed .chain. 29er has nothing to do with the type of chain , the drive train does.

I use SRAM 10 speed "master links" (black one's) on my XT chains all the time. No issue.... so far. Much easier than the stupid "chain breaker" to remove the chain.

If the question is about 2 quicklinks in one chain I guess it's not 'ideal' but I used a chain for a very long time with 2 in ..... no problem (on a MTB!)

Otherwise see Iron's excellent explanation!

I thought it was about the 5mm difference in bb height?

Well 5mm on my 26" MTB gave me knee issues. I wouldn't ride it like that for too long. Good motivation to get yourself a 29'er saddle :P

Ok, a real noob question but I haven't tried this before!

I need to figure out how to replace the chain if it snaps or get's buggered up on my bike using the "Power Lock" on my SRAM PC 1031 chain.

How does the Power Lock work? Do I still use a chain tool? Do I need to remove links on the new chain so that it is the same length as my current one or is a standard size?

Answer #1 // You'll need a chain breaker to remove the two outer side plates and one pin, then just fit the power link as normal.

Answer #2 // If you fit a new chain it should be made the same length as the old one assuming it was done right the first time. Otherwise the rule of thumb is to fit the chain over the big blade/big sprocket combo and overlap one full link.

Thanks for they reply droo!

For those who do not know, SRAM uses 2 types of links

1. PowerLINK is 8speed or 9speed (silver or gold)

2. PowerLOCK is 10speed (black)

PowerLink = RE-USEABLE

PowerLock = REMOVABLE BUT NOT RE-USEABLE!

and you need this tool to remove it
