Just booked for my son ( 1st argus ) and myself and unfortunately had to renew PPA family membership,

R 1048-00 !!

most of the staff n marshals are volunteers, coke sponsor as do many other headline sponsors, there is a request for R120 donation for cycling development which i don't have a problem with, so where does

R10 500 000-00 go ( 35000 cyclists @ R300 )?

I'm contemplating the Argus, but.....seeing that i've only just started cycling, let me do the 94.7 first and see if i still feel up for Argus!

Do it! You'll never regret.

Go for it, much better experience than 94.7.

Both are great fun, doesnt matter what level your at.

Hopefully no Boyes Drive next year, so will be a bit easier than this years tour!

Well I would imagine it costs a fair bit to close the roads for 15hrs. Then theres

medical,

refreshments,

control,

logistics,

the encampments at the start,

entertainment and refreshments at finish,

salaries,

wages for temp staff,

thats just a few of the items. On top of all that, I see they allocated 1.85mil to project funding in 2011.

Let me know if you think you can do it cheaper

The Argus @ R300 including full road closure, marshalling, medical cover, sweeping, start & finish venues, secure bike park, the vibe, dancing girls, the people, spectators cheering, the scenery and much more, is an absolute bargain. I rode with my 2 boys and my father last year and would gladly add a zero to the entry cost and still feel that I got value for money.

I don't think as such that the race entry is that much more excessive than any of the other big races. The real cost is for us oaks up north to come down to do the race. Air tickets, car rental (or petrol driving down), accomodation, food, etc. This adds up to a small fortune if you are going down just for the Argus. It softens the blow a bit if you go down for a holiday as well or like I used to do, I used to combine it with a business trip so accomodation and transport was covered.

I would not at this stage just enter and do the Argus all out of my own pocket. Just too expensive. I suppose I am more fortunate than others. I have already done 4 or 5 Argus rides and is down in Cape Town 2 - 3 times a year for business and my bike goes with me. So I still get to cycle most part of the Argus route during this time.
