That is a really nice knife.

Any info on the steel used for the blade and also what it cost?

I have no idea what metal was used. If I remember correctly the hardness is around 55HRC but no idea what the specs are. Cost was R2500 back in 2003

I like the idea of a 1 piece solid handle, you can obviously still strip the blade out to clean and lube.

The lines have a blueish hue to them, what is the handle made from?

Maybe you guys can give me some advice. I have one of those little CRKT gecko knives and it's coming apart because the screws holding the blade together have fallen out. Any idea where can I get replacements?

I'll try and get hold of Jeff, the guy that made the knife, to find out exactly what material was used. If I have to guess I'll say that the handle is made from a high carbon steel. Yah the knife can be stripped should you wish to, but all his knives carry a lifetime warrentee so should the movement get scratchy I would rather just take the knife back for a "service"

So I went to go and buy a knife for Dipth at Sharp Edge, he wanted me to help him find a good knife.

I wanted an Opinel, I have never had one and feel I have to have at least one in my collection.

Cut a long story short, my eyes fell on this fixed blade knife made in S.A. by Pieter VD Westhuizen.

What a thread! Some really nice knives. I have a nice little collection I need to photograph some time. Love my benchmades, zero tolerance, good old kershaws, and some custom made stuff. I carry a benchmade daily. I love limited edition knives, first production, and specifically look for nice numbers like 500 or 1000 etc. Looks like I'm going to have to add an opinel to my collection too!

I have actually decided my next knife will be one of these, just have to have one.

If you want the true Opinel experience, you need the carbon steel blade. Takes a bit of a mental shift not to have a nice shiny blade tho.

Edit: the only reason I have one was that there was one at the checkout of the local hardware store for R99 and I thought 'Bugger, that's for nothing' and bought it. I can't say I was particularly convinced for the first week or two, but it has grown on me. I'll now carry it over any other common pocket knife - it's light and and has a wicked edge.

Have an old knife that lost it's screws, couldn't find any anywhere.

Ended up stripping a small electrical connector block(those black chocolate blocks) and used the screws out of that. Some loc-tite would help them not fall out again.

Hope this helps.

Good idea! I'll give it a try.

So I received the knife I won on auction and I am inpressed. Not sure how authentic it is and even more so when considering what I paid for it!!

It is bigger than I imagined but not too big either, fits comfortably inmy pocket and has a nice weight to it too. Blade could be sharper maybe.

There was a mix up which saw me pay too much for postage so I was sent the little stainless no name knife free of charge and it is also pretty decent. Sharper then the S&W even!!! Also prefer it's button release for the blade.

Here are some pictures:

Your local watchmaker should have the right ones. There's a good watch shop in the Tramshed (yes, I know)
