Not part of my usual riding routes but rode Chappies now few times on Sat mornings as part of our DC training. Was surprised to see how many cyclists there were, almost like a mini-Argus. Cyclists all over the place going up and down and a number of them not sticking to the rules & etiquette of the road (admittedly wasn't completely innocent myself). Think that place is an accident just waiting to happen (especially with the added complications of the road works) and not at all surprised by the talk of closing the road to cyclists

I personally think that it is very dangerous to ride on Chappies.....

Do they even pay the toll ?

You spoon, you must be stirringwink.png

Well they are road users same as motorised vehicles and do use the same road, so surely they need to pay the toll?????

The city is trying to increase nmt not decrease the use of nmt.

I guess you have a small point. But there is a direct correlation between size/weight of vehicle and the damage to a road. The heavier, the more damage, and that is why generally you pay more for trucks than for cars. And it's not linear, therefore a bicycle's damage would be miniscule and even more so if you go fast.

Interestingly the speed limit on Chappies is 40kmph the entire way, if a cyclist is doing 30 then thats a small margin to have to wait while they slim down from 2-3 abreast to single file.

Riders should filter down when approached from the rear and on that stretch of road considering the speed limit it may be a safety advantage to ride abreast to make sure that vehicles approaching from the rear are forced to slow down and then overtake safely, instead of swerving around at 60kmph or more that they are doing.

I laugh at drivers that hoot at me there, they are breaking the law and I am entitled to use the entire lane, and only move left when required to do so, yet They blame the rider.

On the descent i can ride down faster than the cars anyway.

PS thanks for the post as the bus driver, and please allow us to motorpace you up there, a nice even 40kmph is just fine thumbup1.gif

40km/h wishfull thinking! 20km/h from Noordhook to top 2.2km/h mark underneath.

I think motorist are just quite a lot of the time just not aware as to the rules of the road. Yesterday going up Chapman's Peak quite a few of us doing about 23 km/h at the slowest point but just before we past this sign below a motorist had hooted at us but not overtaken, at the time we were doing about 30km/h - I point at the sign and gave a hard look at the motorist behind us - guess what no problem the guy basically drove behind s the whole way - we rode single except for when passing slower cyclist. Education and awareness is very necessary and by point at signage / solid white line plays a part in making motorist aware. So when a motorist hoot at you and then proceed to try and over take on a solid white line instead of giving the finger - point the finger to the solid white line - maybe it will make the motorist think a little the next time!
