Well then I'm going to get in trouble when I say 32gi chews.

Nah, it's endemic to the sport. The marketers saw you lot of suckers coming a mile off.

Are you a big guy? I am on 100kgs and cant eat crap food such as energy bars etc, I make my own banana bread with nuts in it for on the bike scoff (with game as my energy drink) and for long rides of 4hrs+ I like to take a sarmie with some protein (and flavour) on it and stop at a caf and have a coke and 20 min break. Just depends on how you are riding and what you want to achieve I suppose?

I'm half of you, I weight about 55kg's. I usually push myself when I ride, trying to take it easier now that I'm riding longer. What I want to achieve is to be able to do the longer 75km to 90km races.

Marmite, perinaise and fishpaste.

That's halal, yes, but no thanks.

I weigh about the same.

Water, sammichs, fruitcake and bananas do it for me. Longer ride, AJ's juice works the best for me.

Small proviso, I have some reasonably good cycling genes, so that helps.

Marmite isn't a brand name? Must be difficult carrying a bottle of that stuff in your back pocket

Don't you read the terms of your license? Carrying a glass bottle of any kind during racing is not allowed.

PS, I assume people here know the difference between my bullspit posts and actual answers to questions?

Thanks Guys for all the advice, think I'll start trying to figure out what works best, maybe I'll take some peanut butter n jam sammiches on my next ride and see how that goes.

Cheese and tomato will be easier to swallow when you're gagging already.

I think its also important how often you are eating, small and regular being the better option I am led to believe.

Bananas are nice nice theoretically, but they sometimes go black and mushy on long rides, and then I lose my appetite for them completely, which doesn't help my hunger?

I think spotting the difference can be turned into a whole sport on its own!

Before the ride and during are two separate issues. Robo's answer addresses the before. During, eat before you feel hungry, drink before you feel thirsty.

The trick is to get slightly green ones. By the time you want to eat it, it's perfect.

Hey Guys,

So, I'm getting to the point where I'm beginning to spend a lot more time on the bike than before. Where I used to ride for between 1 and 2,5 hours, I'm now trying to put in more distance and riding for 2,5 hours plus.

Thing is, when I get get to 2,5 hours I feel like I could eat a buffalo, and then it feels like my legs are made of jelly and I struggle to peddle.

I usually eat a banana before a ride, and take water and Fast Fuel during my ride, I mostly drink the water and end up finishing the ride with 1/2 bottle of Fast Fuel left.

Please could you guys advise me on what to eat on longer rides, Jungle Oats Bars? Snackers? Sandwiches? USN bars? Nuts etc. And should I be eating more before I go out on long rides.

Also, I'm muslim, so lets keep this alcohol and pork free :P

Not an expert but had done a few ultra marathons 14hrs + in the saddle. When we train 4 - 8hrs training rides I can and do eat anything. From Boerewors rolls to chips.Ride with a bag full of peanuts and every half an hour I eat a hand full.Peanut butter sarmies also does the trick and cost lot less then energy bars and works as well. Not a big eater before a training ride or race.
