The solution to (drunk) motorists killing other road users? Opinions/Suggestions:

That all been said most of us have driven drunk once or twice in their lives, and have been lucky to not be involved with a mess like this, maybe we should all start here and pledge to not drive drunk....

It's small but a start!

Only place where we can start.

Like that idea - making a pledge will also make us more aware when others want to drive off over the limit. Because you have to think it through and make your choice before faced with the situation. Then to get involved where needed to prevent tragic consequences. Look after yourself and buddies, when we can.

Same goes for using cellphones when driving. Personally, I've been threatened with death by that more than by drunk drivers, so far anyway.

Straightfoward job for a court of law ...... this guy got pissed, killed someone and tried to run away. He doesn't need a lawyer to defend him - there's nothing to defend !

An absolute tragedy, condolences to his family. Is it not time that us cyclists in PE have a "critical mass" ride whereby we meet at a central point and time and take to the road !

This would hopefully raise awareness.

I propose we get the cops to have more regular road blocks, not only "in season".

I like the idea! - Maybe get the guys from Pedalpower involved and create some awareness about the 1.5m rule? - I love our little town, but there are still far too many motorists here that believe the roads are solely for the use of motorists, let alone know that they have to overtake us with a minimum legal distance of 1.5m!

One of the scariest moments I've had on a bike was in PE over the last xmas holidays. Riding on William Moffet during what I thought was offpeak - was first buzzed by some little nob in a polo and then a couple of minutes later I was put in the gutter (literally) by a garbage truck. In both cases the second lane was clear - no need to give me the squeaze.

Needless to say avoided WM after that...

Last year on 16 December near The Willows P.E. at +- 8am the occupant of an oncoming vehicle deliberately smashed a bottle on the road in front of me and sprayed me with glass. Took me a whole month to tempt going on the tar again...

Ps Mr Andre Gouws got his bail application postponed to tomorrow.

I cycled that day. I was on the bike early (6am) and the folk started queuing already for that big celebration they had there. I was with my father, we decided there and then to turn back and go home

Didn't they change the law end of last year, if you know that your actions may kill someone, its murder?

He has been charged with murder according to the Ep herald this morning

In Europe people drink from an earlier ag (legally) but they dont have the same level of problem as we do - why is that?

God helps you if you get caught driving drunk in Europe, States, and Aus as well.reminds me of Clarkson and Co, driving through New York?, standing at robot in town, rev their cars. Cop didn't take crap...they got off, but I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side there. and the cops there are 6'1+, so when he says show your licence, you don't show him 50 bucks.

So, are we waiting with baited breath for the JubJub/Tshabalala judgement that is coming out today? Might give a clue as to how the courts are going to go forward with murder by motorcar cases.

I think you need a college education to be a state trooper, here 8/10 dont even have a drivers licence

Not just State Trooper, any law enforcement in US requires 3 year degree before you're allowed into Police academy.

stand to be corrected.
