my insurance said my alarm wasn't on because it didn't go off. ........

yip!! guys remember that if they break in and your alarm is not on, you will have a real mission to get your insurance to payout. i have specified that i do not have an alarm and its about R20 a month extra but i have the peace of mind that if i pop out to the shop or forget to activate the alarm and get cleaned out at least the insurance will pay out.

2 things to add.

get rid of ADT. dont let them hold you to your contract period, this is a breach. I had the same issue with Chubb a few years back. Had an attempted hijacking, luckily I was wide awake and avoided it, but they followed me for a bit, called Chubb and told them the guys tried to hijack and are now following me, they could not send a car out at the time was the response I got. Used that as a reason to cancel the very next day.

2) ABSA and canceling cards. My folks were in europe a few months ago and got pick pocketed on the train. My dad calls me to get me to cancel the cards. ABSA was happy to cancel the cards on the spot, over the phone, with very little information provided by me.

Hectic dude...just glad you and the family is ok... .there was this horrific murder in Claremont area a few days ago... :cursing: better have that ADT beam sorted out ... that's crazy ..not activating the alarm..

The Claremont murder was chilling. Horrific indeed. Looked like it was a domestic dispute. In Byleveld's book he says most home murders are domestic related.

Sorry ibreugge, that's *** news. At least you're all safe, including the cat. But ja, I've also woken up thinking "something's wrong here". Amazing how the caveman retilian brain kicks in.

Problm with security and insurance companies is that a lowly-paid clerk passes all your information on to his maatjies who give him a share of the profits. For myself, I gave up on those things a long time ago. If they take my laptop and stuff it's a couple of thousand rand that would've been paid on premiums and the like. I don't buy expensive things anymore.

ADT? A friend almost got burgled in Rondebosch - in the 5 minutes it took us to get there, 4 police cars were outside, and ADT arrived 10 minutes afterwards. Now consider that they knew his daughter was in the house alone.

But his wife had a good trick. She'd take cake to the police station once a month - the cops would drop the marked plates off afterwards, so they knew the address well.

What a day this was - mostly because I am overwhelmed by all these comments! Thanks guys!

The following transpired...

ADT is useless - the regional manager told me I have to wait until Friday for any feedback, as the guys work at night and sleep during the day. He also told me to accept that 15 minutes as acceptable after an emergency call. I asked him to send me the cancellation documents immediately.

ABSA: We are currently standing in their branch - while FNB advised me at 4:00 AM when my new cars will be delivered, Absa refuses to issue a new card because the certified ID copy was issued in 2011. They want us to get a ID book first.

SAPS: brilliant so far, received another SMS, went there to get an affidavit.

Am tired though and can't wait to pick up kiddo from crèche and enjoy the evening with him and my wife. I still get to keep the main things in my life., fortunate me.

In the cape times this morning it said that one those scum had worked on the property before !

i recon if you want security companies to get to the scene quickly tell them you've shot the burglar and he's dead, am sure they'll be there quickly. Actually maybe they won't if they recon there's nothing more than can do.

The majority of burglaries, assaults etc are by someone you know.

Really like the Gatling Gun!

"In 1861 Doctor Richard Gatling patented the Gatling Gun believing it would bring an end to bloodshed."

Yip, I also heard this before...whenhoning the ploice..just say you "think" you saw a gun / heard gunshots being fired...

THAT gets them to priority #1 and they are there in aflash...always easier to apologise AFTERWARDS by saying yuo were mistaken/ confused in all the action!!
