PYGA vs SPECIALIZED epic

I also tested the pyga the past 5 days.. It was terribly heavy, because spec's was horrible. Recon shock, alex wheels, scott team handle bar. That a side, it suprised me when I took it to groenkloof. Lovely handling!! I think if you spec the pyga with SID, light weight wheels ect, it should be better than epic for the most of us...

With xo, revelation and arch X should be able to get it to weigh in at 11.5 ish or there abouts which is not bad for a full suss. Also the thing climbs and seems to put power down so efficiently I did not even notice the weight

buying a spez is like most roadies buying trek pre lance shakedown, spez throws tons of cash at marketing, so big component of the cost is used for that. there are niche brands that are just as good. my biggest problem with spez is that you are locked into proprietary technology. becomes difficult to service, swop out parts etc...i worry this might hurt them in long run..

Not them, you. As your service options are limited and replacement parts can only be bought from Spesh endorsed shops. Before they go totally direct and then you can only deal with Spesh owned shops.

Point taken... Reason for SID would be weight related only. I will be doing stage racing an marathon racing with the pyga. so 100mm is enough. But reba is now also on my list. My goal is to get it lighter than say 11.9kg. Should be good to go for racing? Have anyone tried the scott 920? Same price class, carbon front triangle.. Just wondering about the handling...

I've updated my table to include a few other bikes that might be comparable.

Bike |HA |TT |WB |CS |FRONT|REAR |
Yeti SB95 |68.5|587|1140|445|120mm|127mm|
Genius 900|69 |600|1143|448|130mm|130mm|
Stumpy |69 |596|1148|450|130mm|130mm|
Mach429 |69.2|607|1131|450|120mm|100mm|
Tallboy LT|69.5|584|1113|453|140mm|140mm|
Pyga |69.5|590|1126|440|120mm|110mm|
TranceX |69.5|594|1120|452|120mm|120mm|
Tracer |70 |597|1168|450|140mm|140mm|
Cube AMS |70 |597|1130|450|120mm|120mm|
Camber |70 |587|1147|447|110mm|110mm|
Spark |70.1|598|1112|448|100mm|100mm|
RIP9 |70.5|603|1131|455|120mm|120mm|
Epic |70.5|589|1109|448|100mm|100mm|
Element |70.6|605|1120|445|100mm|95mm |
AnthemX |71 |592|1080|460|100mm|100mm|
Tallboy |71 |584|1082|445|100mm|100mm|

Some of them can be run with longer forks than above, eg the Tallboy and Element are comfortable with a 120mm fork, which obviously slackens the angles a bit.

So there are lots of choices. Any of them would be good for trail riding, with the sweet spot probably being those with 120/130mm travel. The longer the front travel, the taller the headtube, and the more likely you'll have problems controlling it on steep climbs.

For marathon riding you're looking for something with efficient suspension, so that generally favours the bikes with less travel and/or with effective pedalling platform in the suspension. Also you'll probably want something designed around a longer top tube so that you don't sit too upright.

At the end of the day though, its not only about the numbers - everyone's body dimensions are different shapes, so some bikes might fit better than others.

Pyga geometry sits between a Camber and a Stumpjumper, but with very short chainstays. A closer comparison would be a Giant Trance X 29er

Bike |HA |TT |WB |CS |FRONT|REAR |
Stumpy |69 |596|1148|450|130mm|130mm|
Pyga |69.5|590|1126|440|120mm|110mm|
TranceX|69.5|594|1120|452|120mm|120mm|
Camber |70 |587|1147|447|110mm|110mm|
Epic |70.5|589|1109|448|100mm|100mm|

What size are you comparing here?

Bought a Giant anthem advanced(medium) 12.1 kg out of the box with a tubeless conversion done. Fitted snakeskin ralph/nobby combo. You will easily be able to get it down to 11.9kg

Think if you're going to fiddle with the weight, wheels are #1, #2 and #3. Anywhere else on the bike and losing a kg or two around the belly will have more effect.

i am really keen to test ride a pyga - please can someone let me know where and how. I am based in fourways(Design quarter). Is this a bike you would ride the epic on?

Hi there

Have a look at the Bicylcing web site,

There is a test Ride before you buy event being arranged for the 24th November, Pyga is coming out, will also be attending.

I've updated the table with the SB95. I left it out originally because I think its heading into "all-mountain" territory. My master spreadsheet that I've copied this from has another 15 or so bikes, but I don't have time to retype it all :)

I understand, but technically speaking would the Spez be that much quicker? Uhm...I'll keep quiet about my age. I'm moving over from hardtail 26" to 29" dual susp, so new experience for me.

what are you riding now? is it a fancy ass 26" or a medium range one, only ask this because it affects how awesome the pyga was for you.
