What's a Karcher?

Karcher/WAP etc. High pressure washers. Pretty handy in the workshop.

Slowbee, care to explain why you think this isn't valid in a workshop thread?

A good bench is a must.

I have an old fashioned wooden bench about 2m long with cupboards etc and a proper wood and metal vice at either end.

I want to buy a stand to convert my Makita into a drill press

this thread calls for one of those pictures :

"what we think our workshops look like

what our wives think our workshops look like

what our mates think our workshops look like

what our colleagues think our workshops look like

what it really looks like."

any photoshop artists here...?

How do you guys take care of your workshop tools? A friend who is a mechanic (car) says he put a light covering of car oil on all his tools, keeps the rust off and is easier to keep clean.

Can you do the same with the bike tools ? Maybe use a light covering of chain lubrication (oil based) ?

A bit expensive when you have woodworking, general and bike tools.Good old multigrade does the job.

Twice a year is all it needs unless you leave them out in the rain at Scarborough.Useless on SS tools though as it will cause them to rust.

ss = stainless steel ?

so an oil layer on stainless will cause them to rust ?

Yes

Stainless is low carbon.Oil is.........carbon.

I don't think that is right. ss is high in chromium which is the corrosion preventer. nothing to do with carbon i don't think. ss won't rust with oil.

I am afraid you are incorrect. It will show corrosion if exposed to the elements esp at the coast

I remember when we built the new Groote Schuur Hospital and a bright foreman gave the instruction to coat all the ss walkways, landings, handrails etc with diesel to make them shine for handover. In 2 weeks they were all brown ;-)
