horse fly bites

Does anyone have advise on how to avoid being bitten by horse flies when mtb'ing. I have a terrible reaction to the bites. Swelling the next day followed by itching for 4 days. any recommendations for treatment.

Got bitten one once on my thumb, at least I think was a Horse Fly, pain was excruciating for a few seconds. We have them everywhere at our place, but no idea how to avoid them

Was riding yesterday and had 20 flies (no i'm not a hobo) around me on the climbs, you only drop them at around 22km/h.

I got bitten something terrible in Oz and NZ when i was trekking there.

 

Put bleach on the bites afterwards, definitely stopped the itching.

 

Don't know how to avoid the bites though...

It might sound stange , but try using Vicks Vapo Rub on the bite itself - relieves the itchyness
