The King Edward VII School in Johannesburg on Sunday confirmed it had banned three pupils from participating in sporting activities, after the boys confessed to using performance enhancing drugs.

The Gauteng Department of Education said the matter came to light when a parent reported to have found a syringe in her son's bag to the school.

The department's Charles Phahlane said as a result 10 other pupils have also undergone doping tests.

"These things are serious and we view it in a very serious light.

"The school has regular programmes to test their athletes for abuse of substances.

"We do try to address it so it doesn’t become a problem."

what is pathetic is the 3 MONTH suspension they got. They should prevent them from competing (school level, university, nationally or internationally) for at least 5 years....make them think about what they are doing!

There is a very very recent case of a pupil from my high school in hospital with collapsed liver and other complications from doping. Not good, it's a ticking timebomb.

I matriculated in the 80's and it was alive and well then....so no suprise to me............

Wouldn't surprise me. Played rugger in the '80s. Had to scrum against some huge buggers.

Our dudes didn't. We were too crap. I mean, I was a prop...

I doped, Coach was fine with it. Turned my life around now, stupidest mistake I've ever made. Even considered starting an anti doping organisation that speaks to schools and who ever else may benefit from it.

The implications go far beyond just the health risk.

Family & friends suffer because you are not yourself. Emotionally it screws you up so bad.
