Tandem doing the Freedom Challenge this year. Only the second one ever. Hardcore when you consider having to lug it over 3m game fences.

Kalfi's 29er Tandem, check that road triple crank, can you say speed?

i have never really paid attention to the configuration of a tandem...but does the front guy help turn the crank of the back guy? surely this is inefficient? and surely you have to be in absolute sync..i.e. you cant suddenly stop pedalling as the other person will keep the cranks going

Stoker and captain must pedal at same cadence because front and rear cranks are connected directly by the left side chain, without a freewheel. Stopping pedalling to freewheel, it helps to go to a lower cadence first and not just stop dead. Communication between riders is crucial, even when up or down shifting. Start by stoker clipping in first and stop by captain clipping out first. Standing up to pedal takes some co-ordination at first.

I don't even want to imagine the co-ordination needed for jumping the beast! (We did manage to do a very respectable track stand on our road tandem though! It always got us some comments at the traffic lights if we did a track stand while the single riders unclipped and put a foot down.)

I don't know anything about tandems.

I did however see Northcliff cycles lending a a pair of ladies a tandem to test ride some time back.

Perhaps they'll do the same for you.

You should give them a call. 011 476 2110

The front crank has a spider on the left hand side with a double spider crank at the back. The left hand cranks have the same size chain blade and a eccentric insert at the front oversized BB shell. The BB is now fitted in this and the offset allows you to set the tension on the left hand side chain. It also allows you to remove the chain and set the crank timing.

The stoker has to endure many a chirp from other cyclists on half bicycles that they are not working. They are actually the heart of any Tandem team. When you find your Tandem partner make every effort to keep him/her happy as they are not easy to find. They have almost a total zero frontal vision. They cannot see the road and are totally reliant on the instructions and warnings of the Tandem captain. Later on you become a very focussed Tandem team when intuition changing gears and standing up when cycling uphill. Tandem cycling is a very difficult discipline as it has to cater for the differing styles of two cyclists.
