Xt it is!

A fine call!

Not sure how Avid manages to sell brakes really. I'm not normally one for writing off a whole brand but man oh man do I detest Avid brakes.

I built an SSer for the missus and she had some Avid Carbon Ultimates lying around which we used - I prefer the super cheap M455 (deore class) shimano brakes on my SSer.

I thought I will try out the Avids when I bought my new bike. What a huge mistake. I am already planning to get some XT's on there ASAP, and that is after only 450KM on the Avids... I am massively disappointed in the Elixir 7's

So, I'm the only one who finds Avids work fine...

You want to spend R800 for why?

You only THINK Avids work fine - when you've tried Shimano (or two pieces of cardboard with a peg holding them together) then you'll realise Avids dont work ;-)

See my response to DaveT :-)

Seriously though - I really dislike Avids - I find they have zero feel (you can't really tell when the pad hits the rotor), zero modulation (the distance between off and on is about a billionth of a micron difference in lever pull) and very little ultimate braking power.

The brakes themselves are also poorly made.

I guess we all have our favourite favourites (and yes I'm a shimano fan) but I would buy any other brake system before Avid.

This guy said it best :-)

"That dumpster is far too nice of a final resting place for a set of elixirs. They should all be melted down and poured into dog sh*t shaped molds, which would be a true representation of there stopping prowess. Seriously, why no recall? I'm on my third set and they still feel like, well, dog sh*t!"

I bought a cannondale flash with avids on and i was not sure why people did not like them .

then i fitted a set of xt to my other bike and now i know why the avids are not liked .

i cant wait to get the avids of my dale , they are not worth what you pay for them .

Agree with you here, I have Elixir 3's, have changed pads (original avid pad, avid orgainic and now EBC's which are the quietest so far) and rotors and they still squeal or do the turkey gobble. Partner has the 455's on her bike and what a pleasure, am thinking of getting rid of mine and fitting an old set of Tektros I have laying around. Cant wait to get rid of mine!

I have the XX World Cup brakes on my bike and haven't tried the XT's so can't compare.

But a pic I have of Burry shows the XX's on his bike - surely they cannot be that bad if he used them?

Burry (as with most of the pro's) could change brake pads, rotors, actual brakes after every ride...

Not really an apples with apples comparison where us hacks are stuck with the brakes for sometime.

I'm also pretty sure the XX brakes you see in the pic are not the same as the XX brakes you have. Manufacturers are constantly running proto and development products on team bikes - even if the difference only lies in the pads or rotors...

Out of interest how do XT's compare to Formula R1's?

Apologies if this is a bit of a thread hijack...

I found my Formulas to be as bad as my Avids... less noise, but the same modulation issues etc as mentioned earlier.

Sold both. Only run Shimano now. (About to try Hope though whistling.gif ).
