Anybody imported a helmet from CRC here...what was the duties?

Got a Super 2R, paid 30% duties, 10% handling and 14% VAT as I chose DHL as courier.  Worked out at about the same price as a carbon full face!

Yikes!

I have been fortunate on the duty front.

1st helmet and first pair FiveTens... I paid duty (back in 2010).

But subsequently over the years I have brought in 4 other helmets, and 6 other pairs of FiveTens. All escaping SARS

The one helmet (TLD A1, along with a DH jersey, GoPro and accessories) was sent by my sister in the US. She wrapped it like a present and made a fake birthday card so she could declare it as a gift

Very nice!

I have a little trick that seems to have helped with my streak of duty-free shopping...

Besides the TLD A1 shipment, all others were from online stores. (CRC, Probikeshop.fr, Bike-components.de, bike24.de).

If I am buying a dutyable item, I add it somewhere in the middle of the cart and load the cart up with silly little non-dutyable items. Like quick links, shifter cable ends etc. All things that are useful as consumables, AND as camouflage for those 1 or 2 dutyable items.

I then rely on the fact that the JIMC peeps are lazy when it comes to reading the full pack list, and assume that everything is just parts.

  • Loaded X40 rims
  • 40mm wide (35mm internal). It makes a 2.4" Ardent look like a 27.5+ tyre.
  • 430g

(They added approx. 35g just to make sure the rim is super tough. Hence the final weight of 430g)

And then some...

2mm wider and only 25g heavier

The Ibis rims seem to be a happier middle ground.

  • 41mm external. 35mm internal width
  • 473g per rim (a fair bit heavier, but Ibis has a good track record when dealing in the dark arts of Tupperware)

Comparison of prices for rim only according to fanatikbike.com

  • ENVE (all models) - $999
  • NOX (all models) - $479
  • Ibis (all models) - $450

What's nice is it looks like there's actually some sort of local distribution.

They list some of the older model NOX composite rims on their website.

As an added bonus I see they also flog some sweet protection gear.

List of retailers in western cape

They list this pretty stem too

Reminds me of the straitline stuff. Would be nice to see more brands like these here.

Add Derby to that list @ $ 380 per rim.
