So much bull**** being spewed in this thread its not even funny.

Advice given by people that can't even apply their own advice, people who think they know it all and people who shouldn't even be on a bike.

"Insert puke smiley"

All I know is my Nukeproof Electrons are arriving Tuesday and that is all ;)

My next purchase will be Nukeproof pedals and some Impact Low II. Love the FireEye pedals I have now with my DCs. Can always be better though :D

Flat pedals are for riders who need to jump off their bike when they freak out.

Just kidding btw

They certainly help when bailing. I'm older and find that I don't bounce so well any more, but I'm not interested in riding safer.

Johan, the July issue of What Mountain Bike has a review of trail shoes. The Shimano AM shoes with clips are great. They can also be used unclipped if you ride with mallets.

Let me clarify. Not only do toe clips add next to zero efficiency to the pedal stroke, they're inherently dangerous. If you've done them up just a bit too tight, wham. You're going down with the bike. The only place you should be using toe clips is at virgin on their spinning bikes.

Track cyclists use them though .. they must be onto something?

I maintain that you should be proficient using both flats and cleats. Brian Lopes agrees with me

I know I'm a bit late in the adoption of flats... but I can honestly say that even with the loaner pair of Nukeproofs with just a pair of Salomon takkies over about 8 rides, I can understand what the fuss is all about. Now that the flat pedals are back with their owner, I have to get my own pair with proper shoes. I have a nice combo in mind. :)

I have many scars from those damn toe clips back in the day

I ride mostly with cleats but bought some flat pedals and shoes a few weeks ago.

I do enjoy being able to put my foot out quicker with flats.

For the forest tracks it's flats.

No. Just, no.

Capitain, let m3 clarify. As much as I agree with you, toe clips have their uses. Read what Johan wants, clearly he's going to be hiking a bike lots on his ride. Normally I'd not be recommending toe clips either, (and efficiency be damned, we're not talking xco here) but sometimes they have their uses. You don't use those straps to tighten your foot in, just to keep it secure on the pedal.

I use them sometimes when I'm going to hike-a-bike lot, and I'm wearing hiking boots.

Think about it, Johan isn't going to be racing??? Just using the bike as a means of transport.

Sorry Johan, I'm making huge assumptions here.

I was organising an expedition to some remote areas of Lesotho. Lots of hike a bike, following horses, no roads or easy tracks. This is the solution that I got.

thanks guys - might be just learning curve for me - will check, maybe pedal is to tight

Noob + cleats=fall .Experience cyclist+cleats= no fall. Loosen them and practice uncleating

@armpies Thanks for the advice, I'm on a big quest for the Holy Grail it seems :)

"Lightweight, waterproof hiking boot with the right sole compound to work on flats"

I apologise for taking this discussion off at a tangent, but it's important (for me and I'm sure others)

Just yesterday I was reliably informed that using cleats improves one's efficiency by 20%.....but the informant was so far back I might have miss-heard him ;)

At the end of the day, it's what works for each person under specific circumstances.
