Not at all transferable? that sucks.... it's a lot of money to throw away if things don't work out

well to clarify, not transferable to another athelete. You can transfer your entry to another IM race in Europe - but has to be a race up to end June 2014 (and can't be transferred to the following year's IMSA). Otherwise if you withdraw before 6 Dec you can get 50% back.

Thanks dracs, I guess the policy has pros and cons.

So if some hypothetical entrant broke their leg/arm/ankle on the 8th of Feb, too bad, so sad.... c'est la vie

yup - not fair really. Should be a full refund if you produce a medical certificate... Would also help in preventing people competing who have recently had flu for eg (think of the 2 guys that died at 70.3)...

Up to a certain piont. I broke ribs and it was to close to the event so had to take the financial hit ...

Ask JGR...

Well guys strictly speaking if you are an average swimmer (01h30) and an average biker (06h30) that will leave you 9 hours for the marathon...... Anyone can walk at 5km per hour.... Just saying................

Exactly...I walked 80 and 90 percent of the marathon at the last 2 events respectively.I have accepted the fact that my knee does not allow me to run much. If your aim is to finish it is still very doable. My two marathons took 6.45 and 7.30 respectively...

100% in for 70.3 next year. Already entered. (will be my first)

IMSA - 90% chance I will do it....will only commit cash later in the year though.

I don't agree with a full refund, but transfer to the next year's event should be allowed on the basis of a medical certificate, I think that you can do this with Epic. You should have to chip in with the difference in entry fees as a handling change of around 10%.

sure, that would be fair. As opposed to getting sweet fa back - which is clearly not.

Hahaha

How was Lanzarote?

They say its the toughest Ironman in the world - It truly is. The swim was awesome in a perfectly flat sea with crystal clear water. The problem comes when you get on the bike and have to cycle some of the worst hills I have ever seen in wind that made PE 2012 look like like a breeze.

By the time you get to the run its a survival game on a route that is mind numbing, wind again, and little rolling hills that feels like you're going up bunkers by the time you get to them.

What got to me the worst during this race the lack of nutrition and poor volunteers on route. On the bike you had the option of red bull, water and power bar bars. On the run it was water, red bull and power bar drink with gels if at every other aid station if you're lucky. Volunteers standing with a smoke in hand feeding you red bull isnt the best way to a good marathon time.

Overall poorly organized in comparison to SA but still definitely worth doing even if its just for the bragging rights that come with it.

oooh.... It seems I'm below "average"...... maybe I need to reconsider :whistling:

Well, a 1:30 swim would have put you in about 1330th position out of 1542 athletes, so actually pretty close to the back.

A 1:15 would put you squarely in the middle of the pack :)

I'm afraid I'm more of a 'back-of-the-packer'.... likely to be position 1538

At the moment I wouldn't be able to do a 1:30 swim.... in fact I'm not even sure I'd be able to do a 2 hour swim. I guess there's time to work on that.

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record (I mentioned this before somewhere here)

You used to be able to take out insurance for a small extra amount when entering IM which refunded you if you could not take part, you had to supply a medical certificate or provide decent proof and not just because you decided not to take part to claim it.

Last time I saw this being offered was about 5 or 6 years ago on the Zurich IM entry, but its no longer an option the last time I looked.

Dont know why they stopped offering this option, clearly there seems to be a demand.

The swim just needs to be made by the cut off time, its merely a means to transport athletes to the real start of the event. The time difference between the first and last swimmer is relatively small when you consider how much time is "lost" on the bike and even more so on the run.

Plenty of time to work on it and if you do start, get some professional coaching so that you correct your technique in the beginning when its easier to correct incorrect technique.

I didn't have that option when i entered Regensburg last year. They allow you to swop your entry for another event if you cancelled.

JWhat time period is the swop valid for? Its not a bad option if you live in a place which has more than one IM event in relative close proximity to where you live i.e. in the USA or Europe. But Africa does not have many options...

OPTION 2 - TRANSFER OF SLOT

You may now choose to Transfer your slot upon withdrawal from the event.

  • all athletes that sign up for an Ironman or Ironman 70.3 race in Europe or South Africa before December 31st 2013 are automatically enrolled. Athletes can still withdraw and receive a refund according to the existing rules. However, the race entries can now be transferred up until two months prior to the date of the race the athlete originally signed up for.
  • it is not possible to transfer an entry more than once. Race entry transfers are R290 regardless of the reason for the athlete’s transfer.
  • entries for races before August 25th 2013 can only be transferred to races within the same calendar year. Entries for races after August 25th can be transferred to any race prior to June 30th 2014.
  • race entries cannot be transferred to any sold-out Ironman or Ironman 70.3 event.
  • upgrades between Ironman 70.3 and Ironman races are possible, the fee of R290 and the difference in the entry fee will be charged.
  • it is also possible to downgrade a race, although the difference in entry fee will not be refunded.
  • race entries can NOT be transferred to another athlete.
  • entries can NOT be transferred to the same event in the following year.
  • It is possible to transfer to the Ironman 70.3 South Africa 2014 event, provided the event is not sold out, your transfer request is submitted before close of registration, and within the stipulated transfer deadlines.

Transfer Policy deadlines
