Pants Boy Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Don't believe in guns as the stats prove u have a 60% chance of it being used against u. That's just so much crap. It's bad science, the same as '40% of heat is lost through your head' If you're armed and prepared, nothing should hurt you. The only way my weapon is being used against me is when it's being used as a hammer against my cold skull, 'cause it will be empty and I'll be dead before they get to it.
MrFine Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Ride alone most of the times in and around Buffelspoort valley but always mix my rides around.Different routes and always return on another route.
Roneblack46 Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Everyone is entitled to their own opinion when it comes to firearm ownership, and that will dictate how they live their lives. Not everyone is comfortable in carrying a firearm, and if you aren't, best you stay away from one. People who own a firearm with little training or are not comfortable with guns, may be part of that 60% statistic. The point is we ride alone as a result of various circumstances, and we all have our means to feel safe while doing that. No matter what your "safe" tools are, you need to have a plan when something happens. What I mean is you need to think of all the various scenario's through, in your mind, and there have been many mentioned on the Hub. Not just thinking it through but how you will react and what action you will take. When it happens, it is to late to think of what to do. and this applies to all things that may happen in our day to day lives, hijacking, home robbery etc. MTBc, Danger Dassie, Pants Boy and 1 other 4
steve61 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 When it happens, it is to late to think of what to do. and this applies to all things that may happen in our day to day lives, hijacking, home robbery etc. Believe me ... it happens so fast and when you least expect it and if I had a gun it would have been stolen. Up against 1 gun and 1 knife I did not put up a fight!! I ride alone. I work from home and have often ridden from Germiston to Randburg for a meeting or taken a camera to Linden for repair. R40k camera and R25k bike through darkest downtown JHB ...even got caught up in a Cosatu protest march once and took refuge in a doorway!! mudda 1
Craig Slow Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Mountain bike alone in the Irene / Pierre Van Reyneveld area almost daily.. Never ride in open veld, always next to road (except Rietvlei, Big Red Barn and Groenies) Only cars worry me.... MTBc 1
crash422 Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I mostly ride alone and with most of my riding done in the capetown region. I'm now in jhb and my knowledge on safe trails is limited. I have ridden thaba trails and rietvlei and feel quite safe there. Modderfontein is closer for me but how safe is it to ride Modderfontein? Would like to try it. MTBc 1
FeK9 Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I ride alone... "Long and the short" of this thread is to be safe, and with forethought... MTBc 1
mudda Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 During the week , on my own to work and back. On weekends with friends and family. Twice while changing a puncture, I had these chaps come look. Think they were sizing me up. I normally ask "what the f^^@7 do you want ?" - response is is "Im a gardener looking for work" , seriously, im changing a flat and now im looking for a gardener? I think on more than one occasion they did the sizing up, and thought - rather not ... MTBc 1
Dubber88 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Normally ride with a partner/group on long rides, but must admit I've been enjoying these long rides on a Saturday alone allot. Don't know if I will tackle a solo road ride to Cullinan/Harties and back, or a solo MTB ride out to Nkwe and back, that seems a bit dodgy. But a 3.5hour ride is really fun, just you and the bike and your thoughts. I realized your long rides can't be dependent on someone else's motivation to go and ride. MTBc 1
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Alone, mostly. Mostly offroad in Tokai and on road on the way to Tokai. That and around the peninsula. MTBc 1
Uni Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Modderfontein is closer for me but how safe is it to ride Modderfontein? Would like to try it. The modderfontein reserve is safe, as a girl on my own I'm quite happy riding there, but as mentioned, if you're doing anything remotely dangerous it's good to have a buddy close by - more for medical emergencies. After 12/1pm it gets quiet around there but before then you're be bound to encounter other cyclists if anything should happen. crash422 1
davetapson Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 We spend too much time psyching ourselves out. I commute from (far) E. Rand into Houghton. The first time I did it, I was convinced I was going to die, both from traffic and crime - one and then the other, or both at the same time... Avoid known hijacking spots, stay alert for traffic danger and you will be fine. I don't try and assert the 'rights' that I allegedly have as a user of the road, just ride defensively and make eye contact with drivers in a position to run me down. Not saying it is risk free, but nothing is, and the advantages outweigh the disadvantages many times over.
Weight Weenie Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Well just stay out of fountains for the time being. They caught another guy there on Sunday. Very dodgy looking.
nickelass Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Ride alone often. Many times at night, and never on the road.Take less risks, as more concerned about falling off and an injury, always ride known track.
