The photo below sums things up for me...

Contemplating - taking the scenery in.

Documenting the memories - photos stops where a regular.

Dealing with the next obstacle - bikes were hiked, often.

Reflecting on whats been achieved - perspective.

Magnificent, what a beautiful part of ZA. The Umko is flowing strongly, must have been a hairy crossing.

It was stunning. Skirting the Umko was quite a challenge. Crossed numerous rivers though - some pretty hairy (mid stream, bike on your back, weary legs, rocky terrain under foot...)

Were starting in PMB on the 27th Dec. Massively excited.

Where did you portage? A cannot remember anything on the R2R section before Vuvu? Or did you cross the Umkumaas before Hella Hella bridge?

And it wouldn't be the truth without this pic  .

End of Day 2...

I'm the only one in our group of 10 riders (+12 support) having done the ride before. On training rides when the motivation is ebbing, I keep telling them "I know the road to Ntsikeni...". The section from Centacow to the logde... Man oh man, what mountain biking is made of.

Your pic proves it.

Ah - Ian at Allendale and Dalu at Ntsikeni told us you guys were on your way soon.

Ian has cleared a great trail in the Umko Valley - we headed down to this and skirted along the river bank (pics scaling the rock face) to the Hella Hella bridge. The Umko was WAY to strong to cross and we were advised by Martin not to attempt a river crossing over the Umko.

There were a few smaller river crossings and one mildly problematic one on Day two on our way to Ntsikeni - shallow enough to cross, just a really strong current. Some 75km in the day this is a problem with weary legs.

Ntsikeni is super wet at the moment and involved A LOT of portaging (for us anyway). The valleys are all pretty much marsh land at the moment so riding isn't an option. You basically have a bumpy ride into the valleys, wet walk through the valleys and a big hike out the valleys...

Fun times!

Enjoy.

Allendale to Centacow - 50km 800m ascent.

Centacow to Ntsikeni - 50km 2000m ascent!

Be aware of heavy mist on arrival at Ntsikeni - it's worth leaving Allendale earlier than planned. The mist rolls in thick and fast on the other side of the day...

In 2011 on the FC I recorded approx 2300m for both day 1 and 2. Much check what Google earth says. Either way it's a hell of a lot. Now spare a thought for the crazy race snakes who push to Ntsikeni in one go.. That I cant even comprehend.
