Disc brake road bike!!

Yes or No?

Your views?

YES its a good idea

Reason:

When mtb's started getting disc brakes I was against them and had many an argument why I thought they were a *** idea.

I was wrong.

And that's why I think they are a good idea on road bikes, hoping i'm wrong again...

I think its a great way forward...looks super cool as well...its come about because of the pro's in europe riding some hectic downhills and needing better stopping power...

I call oxymoron ....... stopping downhill ..... two words that should not go together !

I think disc brakes on road bikes look ridiculous and is completely unnecessary... especially in SA... really!

Sure, strong reliable braking is very important, but discs is overkill.

It can't be compared to MTBing, where almost every ride you'll encounter mud, dust and water. There you want to keep your braking surface/pads as far away as possible.

On the road, in SA, discs? No ways!

The other issue is that can you imagine the amount of additional accidents in a peloton when half the bikes have disc brakes and the other half standard brakes. There is a massive difference in breaking speeds between the two.

Uh-oh. The hub's "engineer" is going to be upset with that post.

Yes...for a tight and twisty 7km descent with 17% sections before the corners.

On SA roads...no.Never smelt my brake pads melting on a hill in SA.

Clearly you have not been down the Pilgrims rest side of Robbers pass.....

NEARLY went over the edge there - just not enough stopping power..... more brakes would have been just the ticket..

Come on. I am sure there were posts like this about discs on MTBs. They will be the standard in 5 years, mark my words.

Yes BUT.... and this was my argument in the same topic not long ago

BUT... how safe are discs in a group riding / peleton situation when there is an accident?

i.e. discs making contact with human flesh

Sounds silly BUT bar ends have to be plugged because they are dangerous, so what about discs?

What temperature do carbon rims get up to on long hard braking compared to discs?

So firstly you will have to dive in to the wheel to get a disc injury, and as they are on 90% of MTBs I am not sure that argument holds water seen as though there hasn't been an increased disc related injuries from their advent on MTB races.

You mix the different brakes in a road ride anyway as it is. MTBs with disc brakes are in the 94.7, many road races and in the Argus and they makeup a large portion of the field and we don't have people in the hospitals full of disc injuries as a result?

You have to be pretty talented to get a disc burn, it will take a lotof effort.

Rims get plenty hot as well. Heat is as a result of braking and isn't reserved for discs.

ya not exactly important in SA.

food for thought tho, rim weights would come down in time if we go the disk route, resulting in reduction of power needed to accelerate the wheels to speed? could make for some very responsive wheels in the coming future....

Pretty hot, not much hotter than alloy rims I imagine but just a guess.

TBH i'd rather not get nailed by a hot rim than a hot brake disc

Have you seen some of the ROAD race PELETON accidents and how the bikes and riders get all entwined sometimes?

Granted getting some flesh sliced or burnt by a disc is a low probability (all though we don't really know yet because discs have never been used as a standard on road bikes).

Its the same with plugs on your handle bars, you are supposed to have them for safety reasons and its highly unlikely that you will get a hole punched into your flesh by an open bar end...but

Anyway never mind the hot flesh cutting disc aspect, what about the increased flex / strain that you will get on the front fork if you have your brakes located at the bottom of the fork.

Everyone talks about how great disc would be on long descents, well hydraulic brakes are also known to fade with prolonged heavy usage and I wonder if this would not be compounded by the required lightweight design of a road disc brake system?
