Is XX1 for your average, social cyclist? This may have been addressed in this forum already but at 12 pages of posts I can't find it. I am not as fit as I should be but get around multi-day events such as Houwhoek, Greyton and W2W near the tail end of the pack. Is XX1 a good choice or do I need the additional gear ratios of other gearsets?

In my opinion, it's perfectly fine.

I'm now running a 1x10 (32t XX1 crankset, X9 clutch derailleur, X0 shifter, 11-36t cassette) and went for my first ride in Tokai on Saturday. My current fitness levels are stupidly low, but I was marvelling at the end of the 50km ride (which included a bit of everything, including there and back on the road) at how I never once felt like I was lacking gearing. It's amazing how we've put up with so much complexity up to this point.

1x10/11 is the future. Full stop.

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering. You can run XX1 cranks/chainring with a normal 10spd chain and clutch derailleur without a moment's hassle. It's been smooth as an underwear model's bum so far.

I agree 100%. Got XX1 on my Tracer and really blown away by it. Buuuuuut....not sure whether I'd be able to finish a long stage race (e.g. Epic) with it. I think I will run out of steam/legs/talent.

got xx1 for a while now ,not one problem so far, will never go back.

just make sure about main blade size, started with the 38t ,then got the 36t,bought the 32t on J2C,getting now the 34t,think that is the allrounder for me.

34T IS GREAT

an XX1 on a 34 actually has an almost exact range as a 28/40 11/36 mix - 0.809:1 vs 0.78:1 top & 3.4:1 vs 3.636:1 bottom

I understand that reasoning but am not sure that helps the 'average hacker' that has 3*10 (and most bikes I see in my 'hood are like that), what do you 'lose' then?

I took my 1x10 setup on its first stage event this last weekend.

X9 10sp shifter, XX1 crankset with a 34t Absolute Black spiderless chainring, X9 Type 2 rear deraileur, Sram 1031 chain. sram 11/36 1070 cassette.

It went really well, the Berg and Bush climbs were climable in the 34/36 combination (the day1 spionkop climb was cancelled unfortunately) and there was no loss in speed with those around me cranking it on the flats and decents. There were no chain suck issues in the muddy conditions of the first day, and I did not drop the chain once on any of the rocky rough decents.

Very impressed with the simplicity of it all and the range of the drivetrain. Bike was light and managed well.

Thoroughly enjoyed it all, probably not going back to my 2x10.

it will be 3.8% harder on the ups than the 2x10 (28t) and you'll effectively lose your top 3 gears if yo'ure on a 3x10.

If you're on a 3x10 it's probably better to go 30t at the front.

Not sure if you've posted it, but let's see your absolute black chainring.

What crank is it on?

I have a 34t Sram Spiderless chainring from Absolute Black on my XX1 crankset which looks like this:

Then I have a 36t 104 BCD XX1style/Shimano AB chainring on my Sram Carbon 2200 crank. The spider of this crank can also be removed for further weight saving which I will do shortly. It looks like this:

My next purchase will be a RED 34t for the Sram Carbon 2200 crank. The 34t works great.

from the Absolute Black website:

The AB is ever so slightly cheaper than the Wolfring / Raceface option, but the CNC machine detailing and lightweight design really appealed to me most.

HI Hubz

I have a Spez 26" Epic FSR Comp Carbon 2010

Want to upgrade to X01.

What type of cranks GXP or BB30 do I need?

Do I need a new BB or adaptor as well?

The spec sheet indicates that it has a Custom Shimano BB-91, OS, press-in bearing BB

How in blazes do you hold a chainring, photograph it and drive at the same time!

Impressive.

Just completed the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek on my 1x10 using 32T upfront and 11-36T at the back. More than enough top and bottom end for all the stages. "If you can't find it then grind it" ;-)
