So the battery on my Garmin 305 was not holding charge. I went into the Garmin Concept shop in Honeydew and asked if they would replace the battery. The gent behind the counter said they could not as it was a sealed unit BUT would accept my Garmin as a trade-in on a new one.

When I heard the actual price I almost did a double back flip especially knowing the price of new units. Needless to say i whipped out the credit card and walked out with a brand new 310XT and a huge smile on my face.

So I wont mention figures but if you have an old Garmin and are considering buying a new Garmin I definitely suggest a visit to the store with your old Garmin in hand.

As far as I am aware you can't just take an old Garmin and trade on a newer model. If there is something wrong with your existing unit that they can't fix, they will offer you a discount on your new unit based on the fact that you are an existing Garmin user. It's not like trading in a car.... The discount is very good though.

Edit: And it needs to be a Garmin store or the distributor. You can't do this at Sportsman's Warehouse for example as far as I know.

OK just make sure when you arrive at the Garmin Concept store in Honeydew you say the battery is dying  .

If you're in Cape Town, I got quoted R1200 for an upgrade from a Garmin 305 -> 500. Including: HRM, Cadence sensor and x2 mounts.

Give Avnic trading (or whatever they're called now) a ring. They are the Garmin distributors in Cape Town I believe.

EDIT: +1 on the something wrong aspect. Mine was turning off with vibration (battery issues)

Unfortunately my brand new 310XT has not helped my running pace at all. Perhaps I should concentrate on the running and less on the watch

Stay with me tomorrow morning, I'll start a bit slower than this morning. We can let the 'new' watches measure price tags.

Hang on... I have the screen backlight on all the time.... Maybe my watch thinks I am Ironman and FORCES me to start fast. Just stay next to me tomorrow, we'll figure it out, maybe just turn the backlight on!

I took a faulty out-of-warranty Garmin Edge 800 to Garmin Cape Town who offered me a replacement unit at R1599, which is a great price. Seeing that my unit became faulty during a firmware update I approached the management who let me walk out with a brand new unit free of charge. Great service from Garmin management....not the dude at the front desk!

When I traded my 405 (borked battery) I could upgrade to whatever I want, however the pay in got exponentially more the further I went away from a 405 specced Garmin. I stayed with the 405 replacement (410), paid just over 1200 (I think)

Pity I bought my Edge 800 overseas... Will see what happens when the battery goes ... ;)
