Happened to me a while ago.

Item got posted on the hub, and a chap who wheels and deals here on the hub, contacted the seller a minute or two before me. (the seller told me when I contacted him.)

I immediately contacted the buyer, knowing the item was not bought for personal use, and offered to purchase the item from him, at a slightly higher price. He refused my offer and said that if I wanted the item I must pay the price he quoted (almost 50% higher than what he paid for it, even though he did not yet pay for the item, or have it in his possession.

Told him what he could do with the item, and left it at that. Next day that same item was in the classifieds for even more than what he quoted me.

As they say, you win some and you loose some. This just left a bad taste in my mouth.

This was the days before the rating system.

This is what makes the community classifieds a functional part of what goes on here and keeps building the community 'gees'. Keep checking out the dodgy stuff and hit report, have threads going where it's discussed and let people prove that they can be trusted in a climate where scam artists are everywhere, doing their best to get a leg in wherever they can!

We gotta get the ratings system sorted and used by more of the community!

If someone is going to be a reseller then Matt and co should look at the practise and figure out a way to make it equitable to trade on here in that fashion. Ultimately the idea is for the community to help each other out, knowing full well who the dealers are amongst the consumers. The resellers play both sides of the fence.

Perhaps some selling principles should be adhered to so that if someone is selling something at a bargain or giving it away as they're looking to be charitable than they need to explicitly say that the item is not for resell and known resellers are not allowed to participate in the sale! Any other thoughts\options?

ITS NOT FOOL PROOF I know but its a good start,, which bike would you buy options below

seller A ; no avatar 1 post pinerello at less than half the going price

seller B ; a avatar, good ratings good couple of posts(so you can get a feeling about the hubber) and a realistic priced pinerello

At least if he is advertising it as a pinerello, you pretty much know it's a Chinese version...(please see the humour in this:) )

Edit: sorry for replying to a post that is lank old, I just read the thread from the first post.

You could do that of course, but it has to be appreciated, that it's literally going to be a non-binding  personal request at best.

After the sale is completed, the new owner is by rights, to do with it as he or she feels, even if it means earning the disgust of the original seller and/or other hubbers.

A few choice words along with a consistently negative rating will sort that type of buyer/recipient of goodwill out in due course.

If there are sufficiently bad ratings, would hub administration considering a time out for the member? As this thread shows, bikehub reputation could be affected as well.

How do you guys feel about something being bought on here and then advertised and sold as bought the next day for a profit??

I can't see myself doing it.

It runs against the spirit of the Hub' which is, as I understand it, which is to create win:win scenarios of selling/buying of mostly bike stuff.

Not cricket at all in my view... very misleading and dishonest!

And he's even had the cheek to give himself a couple Trader Ratings
