what's the difference between training on a normal stationary bike vs a spinning bike at the gym? is there more benefit in terms of "bike time" as well as general fitness / cardio workout on a spinning bike vs a normal gym bike?

If you can compare a stationary bike to a bicycle.... i would say the spinning bike gives more of a realistic feel than a normal stationary bike. Generally you have more adjustments that can be done on a spinning bike.

Also those pool size seats on the stationary bike doesn't really do it for me :P

If you have to train in the gym I would say go for the spinning bikes. Just so much more comfortable, position more like your actual bike, and resistance training better.

 

Doing your own interval training on hte spinning bike (2x20, 5x6, etc) much better than a spinning class.

+1, also you can use cleats. But even the baskets on spinning bikes are better than those other strap things on the stationary bikes.

 

I prefer a my own bike on a trainer first, next best is spinning bike. Would probably run on the treadmill before using those gym stationary bikes. Man they uncomfortable

100%. you just have to hope the spinning bike you want to use doesnt have the nose of the saddle point up at a 45 degree angle.....who is comfortable sitting on that?

 

Almost need to take a water bottle, towel, and set of spanners along with you to adjust some of those bizarre setups

My gym has one solitary spinning bike in the cardio section and the "serious" looking guys are always on it, so just wondering if there was an actual benefit to the other ones. Have to agree though that the stationary bikes are uncomfortable.

More beneficial than doing nothing? Yes

 

 

As Rob said....I'd rather run than use one of those stationery ones

 

If there is a spinning class just go use one of those and ignore the instructor (note this does tend to irk some of them)

The stationary bikes at the gym just suck. The saddle is the size of a sofa, and you pedal in almost a standing position. Just cant use it.

 

Spinning bikes are great. Can get your position very close to your actual bike setup.

 

I find that your own bike on an indoor trainer is even better.

that's a good point. i have my bike on an IDT so when at gym I should just do something else - although I still don't have my setup correct in terms of creating more resistance for leg strength training. :blush:

even a stationary gym bike is better than no bike and no training but the spinning bikes are better but use a structured program to train with resistance and use your heart rate to monitor your effort as you probably wont have power readings, I often use the spinning bikes in the class but just let the instructor know I am on my own mission and not following the class. Also if you are going to do this take an outside or back bike so as not to interfere with the classes in progress.
