you got to be really naive to spend 43k on a bike and not be able to identify if it is a fake or not....that...or you have more money than sense

Sometimes you learn that lesson early on in life. Sometimes later. Varsity costs more than primary school fees. Sorry dude, it sucks.

So far I have been lucky buying from Hubbers. Full bikes and frames from the LBS though - I have needed the warranty back-up before and I am happy to pay for that reassurance.

I have bought all my bikes used and some parts .But then i buy good quality stuff from somebody legit .Some bikes were better used than new from the shop .Already tubeless converted .Better handelbars ext .I will not trust my 100kg on a carbon road frame from no-name china

But that's what upsets me about guys bringing the Chinnerellos in and branding them with S-works or Pinerrello or whatever.

And what about Zipps or other carbon wheels. I've seen to many fakes to buy with any confidence..........

It's simple economics for me - I simply can't afford the new version of my bike...

My last 3 bikes were all second hand. 2 were absolute gems and one was a total lemon. The lemon was bought on more of an impulse and my gut was telling me I should have walked away, but I didn't. Fixed it up and sold it on for a loss, chalked it up to experience...

I always enjoy the ad's for a bike that is as good as new. It has only done 40 km. Yeah right who spends R30k on a bike, rides it for 40km and then wants to replace it with a dual. Wankers. Or another favourite and I saw it again the other day. A Spez for 40k second hand, only done 100km. Wants to sell it because it is too big. Any reputable LBS will never sell you a wrong size bike irrespective of if you are spending R2.5k or R100k. And if you spend that kind of cash on a bike, you are a bit of a poephol if you land on the wrong size bike.

Honesty, the best policy, Always!!

If you are new to the sport, I would be careful. If you have been pedalling for a while, why not?

If you know what you are looking at (and for) there is no reason that you can't pick up a bargain. Easy to spot a well looked after bike. Regardless of whether it be a XCO race machine or a DH bike.

I would def look at second hand. I have bought four new bikes and three second hand bikes. Bought one lemon second hand as a noob. First mistake was buying it in Phoenix.... The second was not knowing what I was looking at/for. Cracked frame rendered that one useless.

Lesson learned though. Won't happen again.

I buy only new bikes, also because I have been stung buying used. However, I wait till the new models get released and then search for a bargain. My road bike is brand new, but it is a 2011 model which I bought at the beginning on 2013, almost 40 percent cheaper, with full warranty. My mtb is a 2012 which I bought as soon as the 2013 bikes were released, also 30 percent cheaper than new, and believe me, cheaper than the used options I saw advertised. In my opinion guys want too much for used bikes, especially popular bikes like Anthems and Epics and scalpels etc etc. There is nothing like the feeling of a brand new bike, knowing you have treated it well and maintained it well. That seals it for me.
